In a July 2022 interview with OUTinPerth, Monks discussed collaborating with writer-director Hannah Barlow on a character he found liberating to play—and why he welcomed a queer film that could be both exuberant and unsettling.
Who Daniel Monks plays in Sissy
Monks plays Jamie, part of the group that joins childhood friends Cecilia and Emma for a remote hens weekend. Their reunion is complicated by Alex, Emma’s friend. Sissy was co-written and co-directed by Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes. Screen Australia’s film entry also lists Monks in the cast.

How Monks and Hannah Barlow developed Jamie
Monks told OUTinPerth that he and Barlow had been friends for almost a decade. He said Barlow and the other filmmakers wrote Jamie for him and consulted him as they developed the character, making the role a collaboration rather than a part he encountered only after it was fully formed.
The character’s disability was central to what drew Monks to the role. He described Jamie as a disabled character who is also hypersexualized, crass and capable of power—not necessarily likable or empathetic. Monks said there was “something really kind of liberating and exciting about playing that kind of character.” His point was about the freedom of playing a character not confined to vulnerability, mistreatment or conventional likability.

A queer horror comedy at Revelation’s opening
OUTinPerth reported on 4 July 2022 that Sissy had been announced as the opening-night film for Revelation Perth International Film Festival, with the screening scheduled for Thursday 7 July. That screening is now a past event; Screen Australia lists Revelation among the film’s 2022 festival screenings.
Monks said the blend of genres appealed to him: “It’s not only like a horror film, but it was like a horror comedy, like a really enjoyable, fun, exuberant queer film. That was a huge attraction for me.” His description captures the contrast at the heart of the role and film: queer comedy and horror share the same story rather than being separate attractions.
