What is the 1951 film about?
Dr. Noah Praetorius is a popular doctor and lecturer whose unorthodox manner sets him apart from his academic colleagues. When student Deborah Higgins faints during one of his classes, she tells him that she is pregnant and unmarried. Praetorius takes an interest in her and offers support.
Professor Rodney Elwell, jealous of Praetorius, scrutinizes his connection to Deborah and his enigmatic friend Shunderson, hoping to make the doctor appear professionally unfit. The resulting story brings romance together with medical and academic life, while its central tension turns on reputation, personal judgment and an effort to discredit a colleague. Catalog descriptions also refer to Deborah’s past suicide attempt; the film’s depiction of medical and social issues belongs to its period, not to present-day guidance.
