The book follows three very different people tasked with writing about Compassion for a revolutionary party, turning the work of making a “true” account into both comedy and political scrutiny.
What is the novel about?
In Penguin India’s synopsis, Lord Spider is a celebrated author of popular fiction, J.L. Pillai is an executioner and voyeur, and Rosi is Spider’s wife and a freelance philosopher. A revolutionary party brings the three together to write an essay on “Compassion.” Their assignment puts the act of writing under pressure: they must negotiate what the subject means, who gets to define it, and how a political organization’s needs shape the words they produce.
The publisher’s description also poses a deliberately strange question: “Is it possible to possess a portable, lightweight (say 400 grams), user-friendly soul with a twenty-four-hour battery life?” The joke points toward the novel’s method: it uses outlandish premises to unsettle familiar ideas rather than offering a realistic account of the world.
Why is truth contentious in a “true story”?
Scroll.in’s review describes a setting in which hunger is old-fashioned and air is copyrighted. These are elements of the novel’s fantastical world, not claims about actual conditions. The reviewer reads such inventions as part of a broader disturbance of boundaries—between fiction and nonfiction, truth and lies, and life and death. The “true story” framing therefore works less like a guarantee of documentary accuracy than an invitation to question how truth is made and who has the authority to present it.

The trio’s essay assignment makes that question concrete. Lord Spider’s identity as a fiction writer, Pillai’s position as an executioner, and Rosi’s philosophical work bring distinct ways of seeing to the same politically commissioned task. The comedy arises not only from the premise but from the difficulty of making a single account serve different people and an institution with its own agenda.
How does the novel bring politics into its absurd world?
Scroll.in connects the book’s fantastical storytelling to contemporary political concerns, including surveillance, suspicion around shape-shifting, democracy, and writing tailored to a political party. That is the reviewer’s critical reading of the novel, rather than a literal description of events outside its fictional world. In this interpretation, the absurdity does not take politics out of view; it provides a way to make power, conformity, and political messaging look strange enough to examine.

The party’s request for an essay on Compassion is central to this tension. A concept that sounds universal becomes a commissioned piece of writing, shaped by who requested it and what they want it to do. The novel’s focus on the assignment invites readers to consider whether language can remain open and humane when it is being produced for political use.
What changed between the 2019 and 2025 editions?
The 2025 book is a revised edition of Zacharia’s 2019 novel The Secret History of Compassion, according to Scroll.in and The Indian Express. The available accounts confirm that Zacharia revisited the earlier work, but do not itemize changes chapter by chapter. Readers should therefore understand the newer book as a revision without assuming particular plot or textual alterations.

What does Zacharia’s experience with nonfiction add?
The Indian Express reports that Zacharia drew on his own difficulty moving from fiction to nonfiction when shaping Lord Spider’s struggle with the essay. He described the process as requiring him to “almost relearn writing,” and said, “I had to double check the truth of everything I said.” He also said, “I had to reinvent my language to make it plain yet loaded.” Those remarks, reported by the newspaper, connect the novel’s fictional writing task to the practical demands of nonfiction: checking claims while choosing language that is clear but still carries meaning.

The book may appeal to readers interested in literary fiction that uses absurdism to probe political language and the limits of truth-telling. Its premise also suits readers curious about the difference between writing fiction and nonfiction—not as a simple opposition, but as a question of how authors handle claims, perspective, and the expectations placed on a story.
