Paul Newman had six children: Scott, Susan and Stephanie with his first wife, Jacqueline “Jackie” Witte; and daughters Elinor “Nell,” Melissa “Lissy” and Claire “Clea” with Joanne Woodward. Newman and Woodward married in January 1958, after his first marriage ended. Their family history includes later bonds, but also pain connected to the divorce—and the accounts do not describe one shared experience for all six children.
Who were Paul Newman’s six children?
The children came from two marriages. Scott, Susan and Stephanie were Newman’s children with Witte. Nell, Melissa and Clea were his daughters with Woodward. Woodward was stepmother to Newman’s three older children.

| Stephanie Newman | Paul Newman and Jacqueline “Jackie” Witte | In CBS News’ coverage of The Last Movie Stars, she described the divorce as devastating for her mother. That is Stephanie’s account, not a complete account of every family member’s experience. [CBS News] |
| Elinor “Nell” Newman | Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward | Appeared with Woodward in The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. A 2022 profile described Nell’s work in organic food and pet food; it does not establish her current role. [AARP] |

How did the blended family form?
Newman met Woodward in connection with the Broadway production of Picnic in the early 1950s, while he was married to Witte and had young children. Biography.com dates Newman’s first marriage to 1949–1958; he and Woodward married in January 1958, after his divorce. Their three daughters were born into that later marriage. [Biography.com; AARP]
What do accounts say about the children’s relationships?
A 2012 Town & Country interview recounts that Woodward welcomed Newman’s three children from his first marriage during summers. That supports describing later contact between the family branches, but it does not show that the transition was easy or felt the same to each child. [Town & Country]

Documentary coverage adds a more difficult perspective. In CBS News’ 2022 reporting on The Last Movie Stars, Stephanie spoke about the divorce’s impact on her mother, while Woodward reflected on the difficulty of balancing work and parenting. Clea described her parents as “two really complicated people”; that observation is about her parents, not a statement of how all six children experienced the family. [CBS News]
The Last Movie Stars is a documentary reference for viewers interested in Newman and Woodward’s lives and their children’s perspectives. The available reporting cited here does not establish where it can currently be streamed. [CBS News]
What happened to Scott and Susan?
Scott died in 1978. A later report linked his death to an overdose and said Newman established a prevention center afterward. Susan died on August 2, 2025, aged 72, according to El País’ report published October 9, 2025. These dates matter: the six-child count describes Newman’s children, not six people who are all living today. [Biography.com; El País]

The Last Movie Stars brings together perspectives on Newman and Woodward, including those of family members, as reported by CBS News. Newman’s posthumous memoir, The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man, is another relevant source: the publisher describes it as addressing his first marriage, family and Scott’s death. It is Newman’s account, not a comprehensive biography of all six children. [CBS News; Publisher catalogue]
