One Hand Clapping is a film of Paul McCartney and Wings performing and talking in Abbey Road Studios in 1974—not footage of a concert tour. Its cinema event began on September 26, 2024, bringing the restored film to theaters with additional archival material. That date is historical, not an upcoming release.
What is One Hand Clapping?
In August 1974, McCartney and Wings filmed and recorded sessions at Abbey Road Studios in London over four days. The project was conceived as a video documentary and a possible live studio album, but it was not officially released at the time. The result captures the band playing in a studio, alongside interviews and informal conversation; it is not a conventional concert-tour documentary. Paul McCartney’s official discography describes the project as the “filming of a video documentary and possible live studio album.”
The band and the moment
The documented lineup was Paul and Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, Jimmy McCulloch, and Geoff Britton. Arranger Del Newman and saxophonist Howie Casey also took part in the sessions. The official discography notes that Band on the Run had spent seven consecutive weeks at number one on the UK album chart during this period.
McCartney later reflected on the sessions: “It’s so great to look back on that period and see the little live show we did. We made a pretty good noise actually! It was a great time for the band, we started to have success with Wings, which had been a long time coming.”

What did the 2024 cinema event add?
The worldwide cinema event began September 26, 2024. The official film listing gives the film a running time of 67 minutes, names David Litchfield as director, MPL Communications as producer, and Trafalgar Releasing as distributor. Named performances include “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” “Jet,” and “My Love.”
The event presentation also included material beyond the original film: previously unreleased Backyard Sessions, including “Blackpool” and “Twenty Flight Rock”; an introduction filmed with McCartney; and previously unseen Polaroid photographs. These additions made the cinema presentation more than a screening of the archival footage alone. The official cinema announcement describes the event and its extras.

How was the film restored?
The original was shot on 1970s videotape. For the cinema release, the footage was scanned and restored at 4K, and Steve Orchard and Giles Martin created a new Dolby Atmos mix. Wingnut’s MAL software was used to de-mix dialogue between songs. These are specifications of the 2024 film presentation, not details of the separate audio album. The official film listing provides the restoration and sound information.
Is the film the same as the 2024 album?
No. The separately issued One Hand Clapping album was released on June 14, 2024. It presents audio from the film sessions along with additional songs recorded off camera; the official store lists a physical 2LP edition. It is a way to hear the sessions, not a video edition of the film.
