Who was in the band
The announced lineup included guitarist Lenny Kaye and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty, both of whom played on the original 1975 album, alongside bassist and keyboardist Tony Shanahan and guitarist Jackson Smith. The LA Phil’s announcement for the Walt Disney Concert Hall performance independently lists the same core band.
Why the anniversary centered on Horses
Smith gathered her band at Electric Lady Studios in New York in fall 1975 to record her debut album. Arista released Horses on November 10, 1975. The LA Phil describes the record as a landmark and notes its inclusion in the Library of Congress National Recording Registry.
Smith’s account of making the album emphasizes the band’s shared work. In the official Sony Music announcement, she is quoted from her memoir Bread of Angels: “The poet may stand alone, but in merging with a band, surrenders to the wonder of teamwork. Thus joined, we birthed Horses together.”
