Yahoo Sports reported that the discussion included Saban’s description of favorable Alabama coverage as “rat poison”; the exact on-air wording has not been independently verified here.
What McAfee reportedly said to Saban
Yahoo Sports reported on October 10, 2026, that McAfee raised a documentary scene in which Saban criticized ESPN analysts for speaking favorably about Alabama. A separate Yahoo result reported the “rat poison” phrase and described McAfee asking whether Alabama should listen to ESPN commentators. Because the report’s pages were not accessible for direct verification and no primary broadcast transcript is established here, those details should be read as reported context, not a verbatim transcript.
Why the exchange has an inside-show edge
McAfee and Saban are colleagues on College GameDay, rather than outsiders debating the network from separate platforms. ESPN announced on February 7, 2024, that Saban would join the show as an analyst; McAfee was also among its announced analysts. ESPN’s announcement establishes their shared role on the program.
What “rat poison” refers to
The phrase refers to Saban’s well-known warning against praise that could make Alabama complacent. In the exchange as Yahoo described it, the documentary scene supplies the joke’s setup: Saban had objected to favorable ESPN commentary, and McAfee reportedly turned that criticism back toward the network’s own analysts. Without the broadcast clip, the precise wording and tone remain unconfirmed.
