McAfee said he had initially worried the behind-the-scenes series would spoil wrestling’s suspension of disbelief, but later enjoyed seeing how the business is made. Gunther won their match at Backlash 2025.
What did Pat McAfee say about the WWE: Unreal clip?
In a post attributed to McAfee on January 21, 2026, he called wrestling Gunther “an absolute honor” and reflected on his earlier doubts about the series. F4W/WON and Awful Announcing reproduced his response; the original post was not independently retrieved, so the wording here is attributed to those reports.
McAfee wrote that he “didn’t love the #WWEUnreal concept” at first because he enjoyed wrestling’s suspension of disbelief and worried the show could spoil it for a new generation. He then said he had enjoyed learning “how the sausage is actually made” and hoped the show would help the business. F4W/WON’s report and Awful Announcing’s report both reproduce these remarks.
Yardbarker’s syndicated report also reproduces McAfee’s closing sentiment: he was thankful he could show his children and grandchildren that he was lucky to do “really cool things,” though he joked that the particular scene probably would not be shown to them. He said the rest of the episode was cool to relive. Yardbarker’s version carries that closing passage.

What was the viral clip about?
The footage came from a creative-room discussion featured in the first episode of WWE: Unreal Season 2. The episode followed McAfee as he prepared for his Backlash 2025 match with Gunther. In the scene, Bruce Prichard argued for a surprise McAfee victory, while writer Jonathan Baeckstrom questioned the booking and the consequences of having Gunther lose to a commentator, according to F4W/WON and Awful Announcing.
The clip showed a discussion about a possible result—not the match itself. The episode was reported as arriving on Netflix the week of January 21, 2026; streaming availability can vary by region and change over time.

Did Pat McAfee beat Gunther?
No. Gunther defeated McAfee at Backlash 2025. The creative-room debate shown in the series considered a different possible outcome, but it was not the result of the match.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why was WWE creative discussing McAfee beating Gunther?
The scene captured creative staff weighing a surprise win for McAfee against what a loss might mean for Gunther, who was facing a commentator rather than a regular in-ring opponent. The reports establish that the room discussed the possibility; they do not establish that McAfee’s victory was ever finalized as the plan. The episode’s appeal lies in that distinction: viewers see a proposed booking debated behind the scenes, while the actual Backlash result remained Gunther’s win.
