What is Paris Jackson’s legal dispute about?
Paris Jackson is objecting to aspects of the estate’s administration, including outside attorneys’ fees, bonus payments, and transparency around fee-related records. The central question in the May 2026 development was whether three law firms could keep bonuses they had received in 2018. A separate dispute over whether documents related to fee objections should remain sealed was still being reported in July.
It is important to distinguish Jackson’s objections from findings by the court or referee. A brief filed by her counsel on March 6, 2026, in Los Angeles Superior Court probate matter BP117321 argued against unauthorized bonus payments and raised concerns about fee practices. That was a party submission, not a neutral judicial finding.
What did the referee decide about the lawyers’ bonuses?
On April 29, 2026, retired judge Mitchell Beckloff, serving as the court-appointed referee in the fee dispute, issued the reported ruling disallowing the bonuses. ABC News reported in May that $625,000 in 2018 payments to three outside law firms had to be returned to the estate:

The reported conclusion was specific to those payments and the information presented about them. It should not be read as a finding that the estate as a whole was mismanaged, or as a decision on every objection Paris Jackson has raised.
Who controls Michael Jackson’s estate?
John Branca and John McClain are the estate’s co-executors. Paris Jackson is the objector in the reported probate dispute, not a newly appointed controller. The estate remains subject to probate court supervision. A 2024 California appellate opinion said estate businesses control rights to Michael Jackson’s song recordings and musical compositions; it supplies context about the assets under administration, but it does not decide the 2026 fee dispute.

How did the executors respond?
ABC News reported that the executors’ side defended its handling of legal fees, saying the court had approved other bonuses to outside counsel in prior years and that this was the first time such bonuses had been objected to. Their representative also said the executors understood legal fees required court approval and had required outside counsel to agree to return funds if payments were not approved. Those are the executors’ position, not the referee’s finding.

TMZ reported on July 16, 2026, that the parties were still disputing whether documents related to fee objections should remain sealed. That is the latest dated development identified here; it does not establish the documents’ status on October 8, 2026, or whether a later court ruling has changed it.
