Parasyte: The Grey is a six-episode Korean horror and science-fiction series on Netflix, released April 5, 2024. It offers grotesque creature effects and forceful action, but viewers looking for deep character development or a tightly unified story may find it less satisfying. It is a new story in the world of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s manga, not a direct retelling.
What is Parasyte: The Grey about?
Parasites begin taking over human hosts, and people face the threat of a growing invasion. The series follows the conflict between the parasites and humanity’s efforts to respond. Netflix lists six episodes for the Korean series, which premiered April 5, 2024. What do reviews say about the series?
The critical reception recorded by major aggregators was favorable overall, though the scores measure different things and represent limited samples rather than every viewer’s opinion.
- Rotten Tomatoes: On October 8, 2026, its season page showed a 100% Tomatometer from 14 critic reviews. That percentage is the share of counted reviews marked positive, not an average score. The same page showed an 80% Popcornmeter from 100+ audience ratings; Rotten Tomatoes defines that measure as the percentage of users who rated a title at least 3.5 stars. Both figures can change as ratings are added. Rotten Tomatoes season page.
- Metacritic: The page showed a user score of 7.6 from 19 ratings and listed six episodes. Its cited critics praised the weight of the action, smart departures from the source, and the fearsome live-action creature portrayal. Other criticism focused on characterization that may not match the original and weaknesses in how the story’s parts connect. These are individual critical judgments, not settled facts about the series. Metacritic page.
What works—and what may not
Creature horror and action
The series’ clearest appeal is its bodily, unsettling monster premise, coupled with action that critics singled out as a strength. If you want a brisk genre series built around human bodies becoming dangerous and the struggle to contain that threat, those elements are likely to be the draw.

Characterization and cohesion
The main reservation in the critical response is that the characters and connective narrative may not feel as strong as the spectacle. That matters most if your priority is sustained character depth or a story whose dramatic threads fit together seamlessly. The available reviews do not establish that every viewer will share this reaction, but it is a useful expectation to set.
Is it connected to the Parasyte manga and anime?
Yes, it draws on the world of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s original comic, but it tells a new story rather than directly retelling the manga or anime. Iwaaki said, “I am most excited that this is ‘a new story’; while I am the author of the original manga, I could also be a member of the audience that experiences thrill and awe.” The comment appears in Netflix’s official announcement.

That distinction shapes how to approach the adaptation: expect a new entry in the wider Parasyte world, not a scene-by-scene screen version of the source. Familiarity with the manga or anime is not necessary to follow the premise, though existing fans may be more interested in how the series departs from what they know. Netflix reported in 2024 that the original comic had accumulated “Over 25 million copies in over 30 regions and countries”; that is Netflix’s reported figure, not an independently verified current sales total.
How many episodes are there, and where can you watch?
Netflix lists six episodes. Netflix is the identified streaming destination, but availability and audio choices can vary by region, so consult your local Netflix listing before watching.
