Paramount agreed in July 2025 to pay $16 million to settle Donald Trump’s lawsuit over a 60 Minutes interview with then-Vice President Kamala Harris. The agreement came while Paramount was seeking federal approval for its merger with Skydance, prompting criticism that the company might be trying to improve its standing with the administration. That timing is documented; a causal bargain is not. The FCC approved the merger on July 24, and the deal closed on August 7, 2025.
What was Trump’s lawsuit about?
Trump sued CBS over the editing of a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris that aired in October 2024, when she was vice president and his opponent in the presidential election. His lawsuit challenged how the broadcast presented Harris’s answer. The claim was disputed and was not resolved by a court ruling on its merits: Paramount settled the case.

The settlement was reached with the help of a mediator, according to the Associated Press. A settlement ends a dispute without, by itself, establishing that the defendant acted unlawfully.
What did Paramount agree to?
- Payment: Paramount agreed to pay $16 million. The company said the money would go to Trump’s future presidential library and legal fees.
- No apology: Paramount said the settlement included neither an apology nor an expression of regret.
- Future transcripts: The agreement committed 60 Minutes to releasing transcripts of future interviews with presidential candidates after broadcast. Transcripts may be redacted for legal or national-security concerns.
How did the settlement overlap with the Skydance merger?
Paramount and Skydance announced a definitive merger agreement on July 7, 2024. When Paramount settled Trump’s lawsuit in July 2025, the proposed transaction was still awaiting approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). That sequence put the settlement and the regulatory review in the same news cycle, but chronology alone does not establish that one caused the other.

Critics characterized the payment as an effort to curry favor with the Trump administration and warned that it could threaten press independence. Those were interpretations of the timing and terms, not a finding that Paramount bought regulatory approval.

The FCC approved the Paramount-Skydance merger on July 24, 2025. Chairman Brendan Carr said the Trump lawsuit was not a factor in the agency’s review. The approval followed the settlement, but that fact does not show the settlement determined the agency’s decision.
A Paramount filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission records that the transaction closed on August 7, 2025. The merger therefore did proceed, but the available record described here establishes timing—not a proven exchange between the settlement and approval.
