Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen is Suman Ghosh’s 2024 documentary about the filmmaker’s career. In the 81-minute film, Ghosh takes Sen to places where she made films and uses encounters and recollections to introduce her body of work. The International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) presented it as a world premiere in 2024.
What is Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen about?
Rather than a conventional chronological biography, the documentary uses locations connected to Sen’s films as a way into her filmmaking life. IFFR’s catalog says Ghosh takes Sen to some of those locations, where surprise encounters and stories from people close to her help introduce her work. The festival presents the film as an entry point to Sen’s body of work, not as an exhaustive account of every project.
IFFR credits Suman Ghosh as director and producer, Soumik Halder as cinematographer, and Aparna Sen and Ghosh among the principal cast. The catalog lists Bengali and English and names Mayaleela Films as the production company and sales/world-rights holder. IFFR’s film listing provides the catalog details and indicates streaming access through its site, which may depend on login or rental and can change.
Is the documentary the same as Aparna Sen’s Parama?
No. Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen is Ghosh’s 2024 documentary; Parama is Aparna Sen’s 1985 dramatic feature. IFFR programmed the earlier film alongside the documentary in its 2024 Cinema Regained program, and says the documentary takes its title from Sen’s feature.

| Film | Director | Year and format | Runtime |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parama: A Journey with Aparna Sen | Suman Ghosh | 2024 documentary | 81 minutes |
| Parama | Aparna Sen | 1985 dramatic feature | 131 minutes |
In IFFR’s synopsis of the 1985 feature, Parama is a woman whose identity is constrained by her family roles. A photographer’s attention gives her a sense of individuality, but he publishes intimate photographs without her consent, bringing her into conflict with her family. That plot belongs to Sen’s feature, not Ghosh’s documentary. IFFR lists both films in its 2024 Cinema Regained program.
How does the film relate to Sen’s directing career?
IFFR’s profile places the documentary’s subject in a career that spans acting, writing and directing. Sen made her acting debut at 15 in Satyajit Ray’s Teen Kanya (1961), according to the profile, and directed her first feature, 36 Chowringhee Lane, in 1981. Her filmography includes Parama (1985). Ghosh’s film uses Sen’s own journey through film locations and personal recollections to connect viewers with that body of work.
A separate institutional synopsis for the International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala describes the documentary as tracing Sen’s six decades in cinema, from early acting in Ray’s Teen Kanya to leading roles, while considering her inspirations and causes. That description is the festival’s framing of the film rather than a complete inventory of its contents. The festival’s official site lists the documentary in its long-documentary competition.
