Paradise depicts the end of the world as a fictional chain of disasters: a supervolcano erupts beneath Antarctica, a tsunami devastates much of the planet, and nuclear attacks follow amid the chaos. Before the catastrophe, a selected population had been brought to an underground city in Colorado. The story then jumps from life in the bunker to Xavier Collins’s search for his wife in a world where other people survived.
Spoilers through Season 2. The timeline below separates events before and during The Day from later revelations, and distinguishes confirmed story events from questions Season 3 is intended to address.

Before The Day: a bunker built in secret
Before the catastrophe, a large underground community was constructed in Colorado to shelter a selected population. Workers were told the site was a recycling facility, according to Season 1 coverage. During excavation, a construction manager’s crew suffered from toxic material—a grievance that later becomes relevant to President Cal Bradford’s murder.
The cited accounts do not establish the construction’s exact dates or a complete calendar of pre-Day events, so the sequence is best understood in relative terms: the bunker was built before the disaster, and its concealed purpose and dangerous excavation shaped the story that followed.

The Day: Antarctica, a tsunami, and nuclear attacks
A Season 1 flashback explains the show’s fictional catastrophe. A supervolcano beneath Antarctica erupts, triggering a tsunami that devastates much of the planet. Nuclear-armed nations also strike amid the chaos, adding nuclear war to the disaster.
This is Paradise’s in-story explanation, not a scientific forecast. The selected residents reach the Colorado bunker. TheWrap reported in 2025 that the underground community had about 25,000 residents; that is an attributed approximate figure, not an official census of the fictional population.

Roughly three years in Paradise: a murder and a revelation
Season 1’s present-day story unfolds after roughly three years in the bunker. Secret Service agent Xavier Collins investigates the murder of President Cal Bradford. The killer is an outsider who entered Paradise using the identity of the community’s intended librarian. A recap identifies him as a former project manager with a grievance tied to the hazardous excavation.
The investigation also overturns the assumption that the bunker is the only place where people could have survived. Xavier learns that his wife, Teri, may still be alive. What characters initially believe about the outside world is not the whole picture; the series does not establish that all humanity was wiped out.

Season 2: Xavier searches the outside world
In Season 2, Xavier leaves the bunker to search for Teri and encounters people who have survived beyond Paradise. Hulu’s Season 2 synopsis places the story three years after the catastrophe, using the phrase “the three years since The Day.” That interval describes the season’s setting; it does not provide an exact calendar date for the disaster.
Creator Dan Fogelman has described the surface as harsh, with a difficult climate and challenges to food production, but also as a place where people form communities. Season 2 approaches those years through a character’s survival experience, while also following a deteriorating social order inside Paradise and revealing more about the city’s origins.

The Season 2 finale: Paradise collapses
At the Season 2 finale, the bunker and its infrastructure collapse. In a post-finale interview with the Los Angeles Times on March 30, 2026, Fogelman said the failure and collapse had been part of his initial plan for the season’s ending. He also described Sinatra as sacrificing herself to save others. These are creator-confirmed accounts of the finale, not a complete explanation of what every character’s fate will be.
What happens next: questions left for Season 3
Fogelman has said Season 3 is intended to conclude Paradise’s narrative arc. He has also left several science-fiction questions for that season, including those involving time, quantum computing, and the connection between Link and Sinatra’s deceased son. An August 2026 interview with The Credits, published by the Motion Picture Association, quoted him saying, “All that’s for the third season to explore.”
The cited interviews do not establish the answers to those mysteries, a full chronology beyond the Season 2 finale, or a confirmed release date. Until the series provides them, those points remain open rather than settled events in the timeline.
