The audacity is the attraction: its turns can be thrilling and emotionally sincere, even when the plotting feels overstuffed or engineered to keep the next reveal coming.
Spoiler warning: The review below discusses the season’s major premise reveal and finale.
A murder investigation with an unusually polished surface
Created by Dan Fogelman, Paradise stars Sterling K. Brown as Xavier Collins, a Secret Service agent who discovers that former U.S. President Cal Bradford, played by James Marsden, has been murdered. The opening gives the investigation a strange backdrop: a conspicuously pristine neighborhood where unexplained clues suggest that the apparent normality may not be the whole story. Hulu’s official press page credits Fogelman as creator and executive producer; TVLine’s review of the first three episodes lays out the setup and early turn.
The early episodes build from Xavier’s professional duty and personal connection to Cal, using character-focused flashbacks to fill in their history and the town’s. That structure makes the murder mystery a way into relationships as much as a puzzle. It also means the show is never content to remain a procedural for long.

What the first big turn changes
Spoilers from here on.
The season’s first major turn recasts the setting as a post-apocalyptic world in which the characters are living inside a billionaire’s silo. That changes the scale of the story without abandoning its earlier questions about power, loyalty and what people owe one another. TIME’s post-finale explainer identifies the setting and unpacks the reveal.
This is where the show earns its “ridiculous, complimentary” description. It keeps layering genres instead of choosing a safe lane: murder mystery, political conspiracy, high-concept science fiction and intimate character drama all compete for the same season. TIME correspondent Eliana Dockterman called it “one of the more bonkers shows to grace television in recent years,” and the phrase fits the scale of its swings. The point is not that every turn is perfectly calibrated; it is that Paradise has the nerve to make the turns, then ask its characters to carry the emotional consequences.

Why the excess can be compelling
The best case for the season is the contrast between its elaborate premise and its earnest performances. TVLine praised the show’s ambition, tension and emotional heft, particularly the way flashbacks deepen Xavier’s character. TheWrap’s launch review likewise notes that the cast is well-acted, even as it is less persuaded by the plotting. Brown gives Xavier a grounded center amid the escalating revelations; Marsden’s Cal remains important both as a person in Xavier’s past and as the absence around which the investigation turns.
The silo premise also gives the series a route into questions larger than the mechanics of survival. In an Associated Press interview, Brown said the story touches climate change, privilege and who is selected to survive an emergency. He put the power question this way: “Our show sort of looks directly at that in terms of who wields the real power and asks should it be that way.” That thematic concern gives the spectacle a human and political stake, rather than making the revelations an end in themselves.

Where the plotting strains
The same accumulation that makes Paradise exciting can make it feel mechanically assembled. TVLine found the series entertaining and ambitious but noted that episodes often end on cliffhangers and that the soundtrack leans heavily on moody covers of retro pop songs. TheWrap is more skeptical: it argues that the murder plot lacks urgency, the conspiracy becomes clichéd, and some supporting characters do not get enough room to develop.
Those criticisms matter because the show asks its audience to follow several kinds of mystery at once. If you want a tightly controlled procedural where every clue steadily sharpens the central case, the scale changes may feel like evasion rather than escalation. If you enjoy high-concept melodrama and can tolerate seams between its parts, the very same shifts can create momentum. The season’s ambition is its defining strength and its main source of friction—not proof that every twist lands.

Who should watch Paradise Season 1
Watch it for Brown’s grounded lead performance, the tension of a murder investigation that refuses to stay small, and the emotional questions beneath the genre machinery. Go in expecting tonal and structural excess, not a restrained mystery with a single clean line of inquiry. The critical responses reflect that divide: TVLine celebrates a wildly ambitious thriller with emotional heft, while TheWrap sees uneven plotting and underused supporting characters.
Paradise is a Hulu series, but streaming availability and bundle access can change by country and over time. The Associated Press reported that the premiere was released on Hulu and Disney+ in the United States in January 2025; that launch information does not establish where the full season is currently available. Check the current listing in your region before subscribing or searching for the show.
