Directed by Pippa Ehrlich, it follows the work to rehabilitate him and prepare him for release into the wild. Netflix released the film on April 21, 2025.
What is Pangolin: Kulu’s Journey about?
The film centers on Kulu’s rescue and the demanding process of caring for a young wild animal. Netflix’s official description says a South African man helps rescue the baby pangolin in a sting operation, then works to rehabilitate him for life in the wild. The story is character-led, with the rescue and Kulu’s progress providing the documentary’s through line; Netflix frames it as an exploration of the connection between people and wildlife.

The African Pangolin Working Group says the events span a year and seven months, condensed into a 90-minute film. That long arc gives the story room to follow rehabilitation rather than stopping at the rescue itself.

What is a pangolin?
Pangolins are mammals, despite their scales. WWF describes them as the only mammals wholly covered in scales. They eat ants, termites, and larvae, gathering prey with long, sticky tongues; they do not have teeth. When threatened, a pangolin curls into a ball and relies on its scales as a defense.
WWF’s overview describes eight IUCN-recognized species: four in Africa and four in Asia. Their conservation statuses range from vulnerable to critically endangered. WWF also notes that new research may point to additional species and that wild populations are difficult to estimate, so the number should be understood as the recognized count in that overview—not a claim that pangolin taxonomy is settled. The film’s official descriptions do not establish which species Kulu is, so it is best not to assign him one.
Why are pangolins trafficked?
Pangolins face illegal trafficking, including trade in their scales. All pangolin species were transferred from CITES Appendix II to Appendix I in 2016 because of exploitation in illegal trade. Appendix I prohibits international commercial trade, subject to the Convention’s rules and exceptions; that protection has not ended trafficking.

Published seizure figures help show the scale of the problem, but they are not a census of animals taken from the wild. The figures below come from different reporting periods and methods, so they should not be combined into a single trend.

| WWF, 2017–2019 | More than 609 confiscations in Asia accounted for 540,000 pounds of pangolin scales and 10,971 individual animals. | WWF says experts believe seizures may represent as little as 10% of illegal-trade volume. That is an estimate, not a measured total. |
| CITES Secretariat, 2016–2020 | Parties reported 955 seizures involving pangolins or their derivatives in 33 countries, estimated at around 259,000 pangolins; 98% of seizure volume involved scales. | This is reported seizure data summarized by the Secretariat, not a direct estimate of wild populations. |
| WWF species page, 10-year period | WWF says more than 1,000,000 pangolins were trafficked over a 10-year period. It also says 2019 data indicated a pangolin was poached every three minutes. | The three-minute rate is WWF’s description of 2019 data, not a current measurement. |
Seizures depend on what authorities detect and report. They can indicate the reach of trafficking while missing much of it; they cannot, by themselves, establish how many pangolins remain in the wild.
