Apakah buku cerita fiksyen kanak-kanak?
Istilah ini merujuk kepada cerita rekaan yang diterbitkan untuk pembaca kanak-kanak. Namun, “buku kanak-kanak” bukan satu format tunggal: sesebuah buku mungkin banyak bergantung pada gambar, manakala buku lain menyampaikan cerita terutamanya melalui teks. Umur sasaran dan tahap membaca juga berbeza mengikut judul dan penerbit.
MABOPA memasukkan buku bergambar dan buku bukan bergambar yang sesuai untuk umur 2–8 tahun dalam kategori buku kanak-kanak usia awal. Itu ialah kategori khusus anugerah, bukannya had umur universal bagi semua buku kanak-kanak. Kajian data perbukuan Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia (PNM) merujuk kategori tersebut.
Cara memilih buku mengikut umur dan tahap bacaan
Umur pada kulit buku boleh menjadi panduan awal, tetapi pertimbangkan juga sama ada anak mampu mengikuti ayat, kosa kata dan panjang cerita. PNM menyarankan tulisan yang agak besar, ayat pendek dan mudah difahami, serta pengenalan kosa kata baharu secara beransur-ansur.

- Semak umur sasaran dan tahap membaca: lihat sama ada anak boleh mengikuti ayat dan panjang cerita tanpa kehilangan alur.
- Perhatikan bahasa: pertimbangkan bahasa yang biasa digunakan di rumah atau sekolah, serta jumlah kosa kata baharu yang diperkenalkan.
- Pilih tema yang menarik minat anak: minat terhadap watak atau tema boleh membantu anak terus membaca, tetapi kesesuaian tetap bergantung pada kandungan dan tahapnya.
- Nilai bentuk buku: tentukan sama ada gambar diperlukan untuk membantu anak mengikuti cerita atau sama ada teks tanpa ilustrasi lebih sesuai.
Buku bergambar atau buku tanpa ilustrasi?
Buku bergambar dan buku tanpa ilustrasi boleh sesuai untuk pembaca usia awal; kedua-dua bentuk termasuk dalam kategori MABOPA yang dirujuk untuk umur 2–8 tahun. Pilihan bergantung pada tahap bacaan, panjang teks dan kesukaan anak, bukan pada anggapan bahawa satu bentuk sentiasa lebih baik.
Menurut panduan PNM, gambar sepatutnya membantu menerangkan cerita dan menarik perhatian kanak-kanak. Periksa juga sama ada ilustrasi sepadan dengan kandungan. Kehadiran gambar semata-mata tidak membuktikan bahawa sesebuah buku menghasilkan kesan pembelajaran tertentu.

Apa yang perlu diperiksa pada cerita, bahasa dan reka bentuk?
Jangan membuat keputusan berdasarkan kulit buku atau beberapa halaman awal sahaja. PNM menyarankan buku fiksyen dibaca sepenuhnya atau diimbas dari awal hingga akhir, sambil meneliti tujuan dan cara cerita itu diolah.
- Alur dan pengolahan: periksa sama ada cerita boleh diikuti dari awal hingga akhir dan sesuai dengan pembaca yang dituju.
- Bahasa dan tipografi: lihat saiz tulisan, panjang ayat dan cara kosa kata baharu diperkenalkan.
- Ilustrasi: pastikan gambar menyokong cerita serta sesuai dengan kandungannya.
- Reka bentuk dan bahan: PNM turut menyarankan reka bentuk yang menarik, keseimbangan warna dan tipografi, kertas yang sesuai serta jilidan yang kukuh.
Panduan DBP untuk penulis buku bergambar kanak-kanak
Penulis baharu yang mahu menghantar manuskrip buku bergambar kepada Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) boleh merujuk panduan penyerahan manuskrip DBP. Panduan itu menyenaraikan buku bergambar kanak-kanak dengan format 8, 16, 24 atau 32 halaman. Angka ini ialah panduan untuk penyerahan kepada DBP, bukan peraturan sejagat bagi semua penerbit.

Jika manuskrip ditolak secara rasmi oleh DBP, panduan tersebut menyatakan penulis boleh menghantarnya kepada penerbit lain. Oleh itu, semak keperluan penerbit yang dituju sebelum menyediakan manuskrip; jangan menganggap format DBP terpakai di tempat lain.
