In a 2016 interview, Wentworth actor Pamela Rabe described Joan Ferguson’s loss of control as a struggle between repression and authority: Joan tries to remain composed even as the pressure around her builds. Rabe’s account is an actor’s interpretation of a fictional character, not a clinical explanation of madness.
What Rabe found compelling about Joan’s unravelling
Rabe said she was drawn to portraying someone whose self-control begins to fail while she continues trying to project authority. As she put it: “I love playing repression and the idea of someone who’s so contained, watching that start to unravel at the seams, and how to still try to maintain authority … with the walls starting to squeeze in.”
The tension is between Joan’s disciplined exterior and the strain that threatens to break through it. For Rabe, playing that shift meant making each new turn feel credible as the character’s circumstances changed. The PerthNow interview also praises the writing; it does not suggest Rabe knew every planned development in advance.
How the interview framed Joan’s past
The conversation connects Joan’s behaviour to her history, including her tragic relationship with Jianna. Rabe considered how that history and Joan’s repression might make the character’s psyche more intelligible, while keeping explanation separate from excuse.

Rabe also offered her own interpretation of Joan’s sexuality and capacity for empathy. These are readings of a fictional role, not clinical claims, and they should not be treated as a blanket explanation for Joan’s actions.
Joan and Vera: authority changes hands
The interview situates Joan’s struggle within her complicated relationship with Vera Bennett, played by Kate Atkinson. Vera’s career in the prison system has advanced as Joan’s position has collapsed, setting up a contest over power as well as a personal connection.

Rabe praised Atkinson’s portrayal of Vera’s transformation. She described the women’s relationship as complex and intimate, with each holding damaging information about the other. That mutual knowledge makes their conflict more than a straightforward fight between a former governor and her successor.
