What is the difference between padams and javalis?
Both forms often give voice to a nayika (a female protagonist), her nayaka (lover) and a sakhi (confidante or go-between). Their stories may turn on waiting, yearning, betrayal or desire. The distinction is one of tendency, not a rule that every composition follows.

Both are composed in specific ragas, and their impact depends on the relationship between text, melody, rhythm and interpretation. The distinction is not simply “spiritual padam, erotic javali”: either form can invite more than one reading. Scroll’s 2025 feature and the Music Academy journal describe these differences in pace and character.
Where did these forms come from?
Padams predate javalis
Padams are associated with Telugu bhakti poetry and composers such as Annamacharya and Kshetrayya. Their devotional associations matter, but they do not make the songs emotionally abstract: the repertoire can portray intimate, embodied longing as well as spiritual aspiration. Javali origins remain contested
The Music Academy journal places javalis in the 19th century and discusses competing attributions and court histories involving figures and centres such as Chinnaiah, Mysore, Tanjore and Swati Tirunal. Scroll reports musicologist Arudra’s account that javalis were “born in Travancore,” developed in Mysore and reached fullness in Madras, alongside another view that locates their first home in the Mysore court. The name’s meaning is also uncertain. These accounts should not be collapsed into a single settled origin story. Music Academy journal; Scroll.
Beyond the concert and dance stage
Their history crosses artistic and social settings. Dance scholar Davesh Soneji, as discussed by Scroll, distinguishes devotional centres and saint-composers associated with padams from javali composers working in colonial urban contexts. The feature also traces javalis into Parsi-theatre-influenced Tamil drama and cinema, pointing to “Amtalone Telavare” in the Telugu film Muddu Bidda (1956). This movement across settings is part of the forms’ history, not evidence of one simple or uninterrupted lineage. Scroll’s account.

Why were padams and javalis pushed to the margins?
Scroll’s feature links their marginalization to the disappearance and cultural erasure of the devadasi tradition, social opposition and legislation. As the public culture associated with devadasi artists was dismantled, the performance contexts that had sustained this repertoire were also diminished. The feature describes a later tendency to spiritualize sensuous lyrics, making them more acceptable to some audiences while potentially muting their literal meaning. This is an account offered by the feature and its interviewees, not a comprehensive history of the laws or communities involved. Read the Scroll feature.
The headline description “too explicit” captures one strand of the response to the repertoire, especially its sensuality; it should not be mistaken for the whole story. Questions of who was permitted to perform these works, in which settings, and how their meaning was framed are inseparable from their social history.

What does it mean to perform these songs now?
Contemporary performers face a choice that is also a question: is desire in a padam or javali spiritual metaphor, carnal expression, or both? Who is the imagined audience for a woman’s desire? And how can a dancer portray a woman waiting for a lover while preserving her agency?
Leela Samson, a Bharatanatyam dancer, offers one possible reading: “These are metaphors, not necessarily about man or woman, though they can be,” she said. “It is about the desire that lies at the root of everything in life, an aspiration, something we constantly want to achieve outside of ourselves.” That interpretation opens the songs to a broader idea of longing, but does not require every performer to set aside their literal erotic dimension. For some younger dancers, the familiar waiting heroine raises a more direct challenge. Lakshmi Gopalaswamy recalled students asking: “Why should I dress up and wait for a guy? I dress for myself.” That question does not settle how a composition should be danced; it makes the performer’s choices about point of view and agency visible. Scroll interview.
Vocalist Aishwarya Vidya Raghunath likewise questioned whether the repertoire’s central emotion should be avoided: “We hear padams and javalis so rarely in concerts. But the role of sringara in them, is it something to shy [away] from? It is an important emotion, a transient one and it seeks representation [in the arts] in some way.” Her observation is an artist’s perspective, not a count of how often the songs are performed. Why do these works ask so much of performers?
Their impact often depends on detail rather than display. A dancer must be able to sustain a pause, let a phrase unfold and make subtle changes of expression legible. Samson described the challenge as slowing down and attending to stillness. She recalled her first padam as Kshetrayya’s “Bala vinave,” calling it “very slow, beautiful, descriptive, such beauty of musicality and dance.” Scroll interview.
For singers, Savita Narasimhan described padams as demanding breath control, vocal malleability and an internal understanding of phrase placement and tala. These are her observations about the work, not a universal technical checklist. They help explain why a composition’s emotional effect depends on close coordination between text, timing, voice and gesture. Scroll interview.
Is the repertoire experiencing a revival?
Scroll reported a Bengaluru performance on May 18, 2025, that presented six songs, along with artists’ accounts of renewed engagement with padams and javalis. That documents a performance and a current artistic conversation; the available sources do not establish a broader revival through audience, concert or repertoire statistics. It is more precise to say that performers are bringing the forms and their difficult questions back into view than to claim a quantified resurgence. Scroll’s report.
