Pacific Rim (2013) is a giant-monster action film built around human-piloted robots, two-person neural links and Guillermo del Toro’s vivid science-fiction world. Its reported worldwide box office was about $411 million. More than 13 years after its release, whether it deserves the label “underrated masterpiece” remains a matter of taste—not a settled fact.
What is Pacific Rim about?
In the film’s fictional world, monstrous creatures called Kaiju rise from the sea and threaten humanity. People answer with Jaegers: enormous robots operated by two pilots whose minds connect through a neural bridge known as the Drift. The story follows Raleigh Becket, a former pilot played by Charlie Hunnam, and Mako Mori, an untested trainee played by Rinko Kikuchi, as defenders turn to them in the fight against the Kaiju. Directed by Guillermo del Toro, Pacific Rim is a science-fiction action-adventure. Legendary lists its original release date as July 12, 2013, and Warner Bros. Pictures as distributor. Rotten Tomatoes lists a runtime of 2 hours 11 minutes and a PG-13 rating. Rotten Tomatoes’ film listing provides the runtime and rating.
What does the $411 million figure mean?
The Numbers reports Pacific Rim’s worldwide box office as $411,054,397, the basis for the rounded $411 million headline figure. That total belongs to The Numbers’ reporting; box-office databases can differ in their totals and accounting methods. The Numbers’ film entry also lists a Warner Home Video release dated October 15, 2013, and estimated DVD and Blu-ray sales.

Is Pacific Rim underrated?
“Underrated” is a judgment, not an objective verdict. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2013 home-video editorial coverage said reviews were generally positive while describing the domestic box office as disappointing relative to the film’s stronger worldwide gross. It reported a 72% Tomatometer score at the time of publication; that is a dated snapshot, not a current score. Rotten Tomatoes’ 2013 home-video coverage supplies that reception context.
That record gives viewers a reason to describe the movie as underappreciated, but it cannot settle the question. The film’s appeal depends on what a viewer wants from science fiction: its premise puts the scale of the monster threat, the Jaegers and the pilot partnership at the center of the action. Calling it a “masterpiece” is equally a personal assessment.
