Pac-Man’s official birthday is May 22, 1980, but that is not the date Bandai Namco gives for its Japanese public release: the company’s history records that release in July, followed by the U.S. release in October. In 2025, Bandai Namco marked 45 years since the May 22 anniversary date. The distinction matters: the birthday, Japanese launch, and U.S. arrival were separate milestones.
When was Pac-Man released?
Bandai Namco’s official history separates three dates in 1980. It records a focus test on May 22, the Japanese public release in July, and the U.S. release in October. The company calls May 22 Pac-Man’s birthday, and its March 4, 2025 anniversary announcement marked 45 years from that date. The anniversary is therefore not the same milestone as the Japanese retail release. Bandai Namco’s official history and its 2025 announcement document the distinction.
What made Pac-Man’s play immediately understandable?
Pac-Man is a maze-chase arcade game: steer the character through a maze, eat Pac-dots, and avoid pursuing ghosts. As the game advances, the mazes become more difficult. The core objective is clear at a glance, while the pursuit creates pressure and demands quick decisions. Bandai Namco describes the appeal in terms of simple rules, intuitive controls, and cute characters—a grounded explanation of the game’s accessibility without reducing its reach to a single supposed cause.
That compact premise also gave the game a recognizable identity beyond the cabinet. The character, ghosts, dots, and maze could be carried into products and adaptations in a way that was easy to recognize. The documented history shows that this expansion began early, even though it cannot establish that any one design feature alone made Pac-Man a cultural phenomenon.

How big was Pac-Man’s arcade success?
The official Pac-Man history reports that 293,822 arcade units were installed within seven years of the 1980 release, and says Guinness recognized the game as “Most Successful Coin-Operated Game.” This is the official history’s reported figure, not an independently audited cabinet count in the cited material. Its chronology also says more than 100,000 units were sold in one year, following the U.S. release; it does not describe that as a recurring annual sales rate.
Guinness World Records estimates Pac-Man arcade revenue at $3.5 billion from 1980 through 1999. Its calculation assigns $2.5 billion to an estimated 10 billion plays at 25 cents each, plus $1 billion in cabinet sales. That is a historical estimate for that period—not a current franchise valuation or an inflation-adjusted total. Guinness’s record page gives the estimate and its components.

How did the franchise spread beyond the arcade?
The reach was visible in merchandise remarkably soon after launch. Guinness records close to 200 Pac-Man products by April 5, 1982, including a board game, clothing, jeans, and pillowcases. That figure describes the range Guinness recorded at that date, not the number of products available today. The Guinness merchandise record documents the early range.
Bandai Namco’s anniversary materials also trace sequels, music, and animated television alongside the original game’s legacy. Later licensed collaborations extended the maze motif into physical play and collectibles: Bandai Namco Europe announced a Pac-Man-themed Quoridor variant, a BRIO Labyrinth design, and a Montegrappa pen. These announcements establish examples of licensed products, not their current stock or availability. The documented history is enough to show that Pac-Man became more than an arcade cabinet, without treating every announced collaboration as a product a reader can still buy.

In what sense was Pac-Man revolutionary?
“Revolutionary” is best understood here through the combination of a legible, repeatable arcade challenge and a character-led identity that traveled well beyond the game. Its documented machine installations, rapid merchandise expansion, and continuing adaptations show unusually broad reach across formats. The evidence cited here supports that account; it does not, by itself, establish a comparative scholarly case that Pac-Man invented a particular genre, was the first nonviolent game, or was the first game to attract women.
