Paani is an earnest Marathi drama whose strongest appeal, according to Scroll.in critic Nandini Ramnath, lies in its local texture and the villagers’ shared work—not in an unpredictable plot. The 148-minute film offers a hopeful story about confronting water scarcity, but Ramnath finds its pacing repetitive and overlong.
What is Paani about?
Directed by and starring Addinath Kothare, Paani fictionalizes activist Hanumant Kendre’s effort to improve the water supply in his drought-prone Marathwada village. The story is set in 1999. As depicted in the film, the water table is falling, migration is increasing, women walk several kilometres over rocky terrain to collect water, and families rely on tankers. These are conditions portrayed by the drama, not current regional statistics.

Scroll.in reports that the film was completed in 2019 and reached cinemas in October 2024. Its review, published on 18 October 2024, is the basis for the assessment here.
What works in the film?
Its sense of place
Ramnath praises the film’s rich character detail, Marathwada dialect and local flavour. Those details give the water crisis a human scale: scarcity is part of daily life and shapes what people can do together.

The villagers’ shared effort
The review’s strongest praise is for the villagers sharing labour. Their cooperation gives the story its emotional force and lends credibility to its hopeful, can-do spirit. The romantic storyline between Hanumant and Suvarna is present, but Ramnath finds the relationships and collective work among villagers more compelling.
Where does Paani fall short?
Ramnath calls the plot predictable and the 148-minute runtime overlong. The film’s straightforward uplift-story arc can feel repetitive, making its sincerity and community focus less effective over time. The review’s central tension is between a familiar story and the distinctive regional detail that makes it engaging.

Based on Ramnath’s assessment, viewers drawn to sincere performances, regional detail and community-driven storytelling may find Paani rewarding. Those who want a more surprising plot or are sensitive to repetition and long runtimes may share the critic’s reservations. That recommendation is an inference from this individual review, not a consensus verdict.
