At Villa Park in Birmingham on July 5, 2025, Ozzy Osbourne performed a solo set before reuniting with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward for Black Sabbath’s closing four songs. Osbourne sang from a throne, and his voice was not always steady; the force of the band and the crowd’s response made the finale moving without making it sound effortless.
A Birmingham homecoming built around a goodbye
The event returned Black Sabbath to the city where the band formed in 1968. It was billed around Osbourne’s final performance, making the setting more than a venue: the original lineup’s return to Birmingham gave the farewell a clear point of origin. In announcing the show, Osbourne wrote, “It’s my time to go Back to the Beginning….time for me to give back to the place where I was born,” and called Birmingham “the true home of metal.” The official announcement also framed the concert as a benefit for Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Acorns Children’s Hospice, with profits planned to be divided equally. That was the announced arrangement, not a report of audited final donations.
The scale was striking. The Associated Press described approximately 40,000 people at Villa Park, while The Guardian’s live coverage reported 4.6 million livestream viewers at one point during the event—not a final or audited total. Those figures capture two different kinds of audience, but the emotional center remained a singer returning to the stage after years away.
Osbourne’s solo set: presence over polish
Osbourne had been away from live performance amid serious health problems. At Villa Park he performed seated on a throne, a visible reminder that this was not a conventional comeback built around physical stamina. The Guardian’s account noted moments when his voice sounded less steady than on record. That limitation matters to the review: the performance’s power came not from disguising it, but from the audience recognizing what it meant for him to be there.

Speaking to the crowd, Osbourne said, “I don’t know what to say, man, I’ve been laid up for like six years. You have no idea how I feel — thank you from the bottom of my heart,” according to AP. The exchange made the solo portion feel less like a standard festival slot than a direct, personal farewell between artist and fans.
Black Sabbath’s four-song finale
The original lineup—Osbourne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler and drummer Bill Ward—closed the event together. Contemporary coverage describes a short, four-song set: “War Pigs,” “N.I.B.,” “Iron Man” and “Paranoid.” The sequence moved through the band’s defining mix of menace, weight and instantly recognizable hooks, ending with “Paranoid.”

The Guardian’s live account praised Iommi’s huge guitar sound and the band’s tightly drilled playing, even as it recorded the unevenness in Osbourne’s voice. That contrast gives the finale its texture: the instruments supplied the familiar force, while the crowd helped carry songs whose choruses and riffs had become communal property. The performance was not a return to an earlier physical or vocal condition. It was a final meeting of four musicians and an audience around music that had outlived its original moment.
Afterward, Iommi called the reunion “a closure for the band and it was a good way to go out, I think.” Butler described the response as “pure love” and “a wave of love.” Ward said he felt “completely at home in a place where I belong.” Their reflections underline how the set worked as an ending for the band as well as a goodbye from Osbourne.

The all-day event around the farewell
Back to the Beginning was not simply a Sabbath concert with a long opening act. Guitar World describes an all-day bill that began in the early afternoon and ran for roughly nine hours, with established acts playing short sets and supergroups filling gaps. Among the performers were Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Tool, Pantera, Alice in Chains, Gojira, Lamb of God, Halestorm, Anthrax, Rival Sons and Mastodon, alongside one-off collaborations.
That breadth made the day a celebration of the heavy music world Sabbath helped shape, but it also created a deliberate contrast: a large, busy festival converging on a brief closing set. The event’s scale could not remove the fragility of its central moment. Instead, it made the final four songs feel like the destination toward which the day had been moving.
