Owen Wilson voices Charlie, a family dog who gains superpowers after an alien abduction in Charlie the Wonderdog. The animated adventure presents heroism as protecting the people you love; Fandango’s synopsis also highlights courage, kindness, and self-belief.
What is Charlie the Wonderdog about?
Charlie begins as a beloved family dog. After aliens abduct him, he returns with extraordinary abilities and a mission to protect the people he loves. His nemesis is Puddy, a neighborhood cat with ambitions to take over the world.
The official film website describes Charlie as returning “with incredible new abilities and a mission to protect the people he loves.” It says that, as Puddy sets out to take over the world, Charlie must “discover the true meaning of heroism and save the day!” Those are the film’s own synopsis and thematic framing, not a statement from a named cast member.
What does the movie mean by heroism?
The story ties heroism to using Charlie’s abilities in service of others. Fandango’s synopsis makes that lesson more explicit, saying “real heroism comes from courage, kindness, and believing in yourself.” That is platform copy describing the film’s message, not evidence of an independently measured effect on viewers.

For a family adventure, the distinction is straightforward: Charlie’s powers make him capable of helping, but the story’s stated emphasis is on the choices he makes to protect others. The title’s “real heroism” framing is a concise interpretation of that premise, not a quotation attributed to Wilson.
