Owen Hanson led ODOG, an enterprise that federal authorities described as trafficking drugs, running illegal gambling and laundering money across several countries. The legal record establishes the scale of the operation and Hanson’s 2017 sentence; it does not, by itself, fully establish how a pro gambler helped bring him down. That part of the story should be treated as an attributed account, not a court finding.
Who was Owen Hanson?
Hanson was the leader of ODOG, which the U.S. Department of Justice described as an international drug-trafficking, gambling and money-laundering enterprise operating from 2012 to 2016 in the United States, Central and South America, and Australia. The sentencing announcement sets out the prosecution’s account of the enterprise and reports the court’s sentence: the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California.
Hanson’s own remark, “I definitely felt untouchable,” appears in A&E’s coverage of the documentary series Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel. It is an attributed recollection, not a finding about the case. A&E’s coverage identifies the series but does not establish where it is currently available to watch.
What was ODOG?
Federal authorities characterized ODOG as a cross-border operation combining three activities: drug trafficking, illegal gambling and money laundering. The DOJ’s 2017 sentencing account describes its operations across the United States, Central and South America, and Australia during 2012–2016. Those are the scope and dates reported by prosecutors; they should not be expanded into a financial total, which the cited official accounts do not establish.

How did authorities build the case?
The case involved cooperation between U.S. and Australian authorities. In its May 2018 retrospective, the FBI described the investigation and said Hanson’s operation continued until his arrest in September 2015. The agency’s account quotes U.S. District Judge William Hayes telling Hanson at sentencing, “It is difficult to understand how you got here, other than greed.” Read the FBI’s account of the investigation and its later procedural snapshot at the FBI.
The available official accounts establish the broader investigation, arrest and prosecution, but do not fully document the exact mechanism by which a professional gambler contributed to Hanson’s capture. The title’s “took down” framing is therefore best understood as the documentary’s narrative hook, not a complete description proven by the sentencing record.

What happened to Hanson and the other defendants?
Hanson was sentenced on December 15, 2017, to 255 months in prison and lifetime supervised release, according to the DOJ sentencing announcement.
The defendant counts refer to different dates and stages of the case; they are not interchangeable:

The later FBI figure is a May 2018 update on associates’ pleas, not a correction that erases the earlier DOJ charging announcement. The prosecution’s joint investigative work also included the DEA, New South Wales Police and the New South Wales Crime Commission, as reported in the DOJ’s account of accountant Luke Fairfield’s sentencing. Fairfield received 21 months on October 2, 2018; the DOJ said his role included laundering money, helping create shell companies and training money runners. The DOJ release describes his case and the joint investigation.

Cocaine Quarterback: Signal-Caller for the Cartel offers participant perspectives on Hanson’s story, including his comment about feeling untouchable. Such recollections can add human context, but they are not substitutes for court records and may reflect individual memory or the documentary’s narrative choices. The available official records establish the enterprise as described by prosecutors, Hanson’s sentence and the investigation’s broad contours; they do not resolve every detail in the documentary’s account of how a gambler helped bring the case about.
