It opened in Japan on September 20, 2024, and in North America on November 8, 2024. The film continues after season 4 and adapts the Sacred Kingdom story from light novel volumes 12 and 13.
What is the Overlord sequel movie called?
Its official English title is Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom. The film follows Momonga, the salaryman trapped in his favorite MMORPG who is now known as the Sorcerer King Ains Ooal Gown. The Sacred Kingdom, under attack by Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth and demi-human forces, seeks help from the Sorcerer Kingdom. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment’s announcement describes the film and its North American release.
When did the film come out?
| Territory | Theatrical opening | What was confirmed |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | September 20, 2024 | Japanese theatrical release, as reported in the distributor announcement. |
| North America | November 8, 2024 | Crunchyroll and Sony announced the theatrical release. The announced formats were Japanese with English subtitles and an English dub. |
The language formats above apply to the North American announcement; they should not be assumed for every territory. The original “set to return in 2024” wording is now out of date: both listed theatrical openings have passed.
Where does the movie fit in the Overlord story?
The Sacred Kingdom picks up after the fourth TV season. Viewers looking for continuity should watch the four seasons before the film. Crunchyroll’s announcement says the four seasons stream on its service, but that does not establish current availability in every country or confirm that the movie is currently on a particular streaming catalog.

The conflict shifts to the Sacred Kingdom, whose people turn to Ains Ooal Gown for aid against Jaldabaoth and his forces. The film is a theatrical sequel; the cited announcements do not establish that it is the franchise’s final installment or that it launched another TV season.
Which light novels cover the Sacred Kingdom arc?
The movie adapts the Sacred Kingdom story from Kugane Maruyama’s light novel series. Yen Press publishes the English-language arc across two books:
- Volume 12: The Paladin of the Sacred Kingdom, Part I.
- Volume 13: The Paladin of the Sacred Kingdom, Part II.
These are the specific source volumes for the adapted story, not a complete collection of the Overlord novels. Yen Press lists Amazon among retailers for its volume 13 edition; editions and stock can change. See the Yen Press volume 13 page for the publisher’s product details.

Availability depends on country and changes over time. The Japanese official site lists services for Japan, separating subscription streaming from transactional options, and notes that dates can change. That list is not a guide to availability elsewhere. Check the film’s listing in your local legal service catalog and confirm that it is the movie, not just the four TV seasons.
The North American theatrical release and Crunchyroll’s statement about the seasons do not, by themselves, establish where the film is currently available to stream or rent in every market. For the Japanese service list, consult the official Overlord streaming page.
Who made the film?
- Director: Naoyuki Ito.
- Animation studio: MADHOUSE.
- Character design and chief animation direction: Satoshi Tasaki.
- Music: Shuji Katayama (Team-MAX).
These credits are listed in the Crunchyroll and Sony announcement.
