Julia first helps Ellen pass the Grants’ test, while the episode’s closing news of Isaac Grant’s death points toward upheaval among the Scottish clans. Showrunner Matthew B. Roberts called the reunion rewarding for viewers who had waited for it; his comments about the coming finale were teases, not confirmation of how it ends.
What happens in Episode 8, “A Virtuous Woman”?
STARZ lists “A Virtuous Woman” as Season 1, Episode 8, with a 57-minute runtime. Its synopsis centers on Ellen proving her worthiness to marry into the clan. The episode was directed by Azhur Saleem and written by Kiersten Van Horne. STARZ’s episode listing provides the official details.
The emotional thread is Julia’s choice between reaching Henry and helping Ellen. Julia helps Ellen first, and her ability to read becomes important to the test. Roberts put it this way in a September 19, 2025 interview with TheWrap: “In a weird way, Julia using her modern ability to read is what helps Ellen.”
Why Julia and Henry’s reunion matters
Julia and Henry have been separated, and Episode 8 brings them into the same place in the past for the first time. Their meeting is not a neat resolution: it is brief, and Julia leaves with Brian. The reunion gives viewers a long-awaited encounter while keeping the couple’s future unresolved.

Roberts said the moment was designed to reward viewers who had hoped to see them together: “We finally got them all in the same place, and that’s why I think this one’s going to be really rewarding for the people who’ve waited all this time, who’d hoped for it and now they get it.”
He also described the reunion’s emotional effect on the people who saw the episode during editing: “I’ll tell you when we were cutting that, everybody who saw it was crying … When you have people who work on the show and they’ve seen cuts and watched it and are still responding emotionally, you know you have something.” Those reactions are Roberts’s account of the editing process, not a measured audience response.

Roberts suggested that Henry needs physical reassurance before he can trust what he is seeing: “I think he knows. He was murky until he touched her. He had to feel that she was real and knew it was really her.” The show’s other post-episode comments likewise frame finding each other as central to Julia and Henry’s story, without claiming that this meeting settles what happens next. TV Insider’s recap and interview quotes Roberts saying they will be near each other as the story continues.
What Ellen’s test means for her and Malcolm
Ellen passes the test, so her betrothal to Malcolm can proceed. Roberts described the result as both a relief and a complication: passing keeps Ellen alive, but it also leaves her expected to marry Malcolm rather than Brian for the moment. The episode therefore links Julia’s intervention to more than a single test; Roberts’s comments connect it to the possible consequences for Ellen, Brian and Jamie’s birth. That is the showrunner’s framing of the story’s stakes, not a confirmed prediction of what follows.

In his September 19, 2025 interview, Roberts said Episode 9 would bring characters together at Braemar and that “a lot happens at Braemar.” He also said his plan for Julia’s baby might subvert expectations. Those were pre-finale teases: they do not establish the finale’s specific outcome or resolve the uncertainty left by Episode 8.

The Associated Press reported that the prequel’s characters are inspired by Diana Gabaldon’s stories, while Roberts has no novels to follow for this series. The Associated Press’s August 8, 2025 report provides that context.
