Outer Range is a supernatural Western family drama about Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott and the mysterious void that appears on his land. Prime Video did not continue the series after its second season, so viewers should treat it as a two-season show rather than expect a third.
What is Outer Range about?
Royal Abbott, played by Josh Brolin, runs a Wyoming ranch with his family. Their lives are already shaped by family tensions and the pressures of ranch life when an inexplicable dark void appears in a pasture. The mystery draws the family into events that unsettle their understanding of the land and their place in it. The New Mexico Film Office describes the series as a Western family saga about a rancher confronting an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness (New Mexico Film Office, April 5, 2023).

What kind of series is it?
Outer Range combines Western mythology, family drama, and supernatural science fiction. It is not a conventional story about space aliens: creator and executive producer Brian Watkins described its science fiction as “terrestrial,” rooted in the land and the people who live on it. In a 2022 interview with TheWrap, Watkins framed the premise as “What happens when a disenchanted world stumbles upon enchantment?”
The show’s deliberate mystery may appeal to viewers who enjoy genre-blending stories more than straightforward explanations. Watkins said he imagined a series that could explore different depths of Western mythology, rather than fit one narrow genre. He also described recurring images, including owls in the Tillerson home and buffalo imagery, as emotional “Easter eggs”—a description of their symbolic role, not a definitive key to every image.

Was Outer Range cancelled, and is there a season 3?
Yes. TheWrap reported on July 3, 2024, that Prime Video would not move forward with Outer Range after season two (TheWrap, July 3, 2024). There is no season three announced in that report, so the series has two seasons.
The available reporting does not establish that the story received a definitive series conclusion. Watkins said he knew where he wanted the first season to end, but that describes a season-one creative endpoint, not proof that the overall story was planned to conclude after two seasons. TheWrap also reported that Charles Murray replaced Watkins as showrunner for season two.
