Spoilers for Outer Banks Season 4, Episode 10, “The Blue Crown.” JJ Maybank (Rudy Pankow) dies in the finale. He gives the Blue Crown to Chandler Groff—his biological father—in exchange for Kiara’s safety, but Groff stabs him anyway and escapes with the treasure.
How does JJ die in the finale?
In Morocco, JJ surrenders the Blue Crown to Groff because he believes the exchange will protect Kiara. Groff takes the crown, then kills JJ with a pocketknife. Netflix’s Season 4 ending explanation establishes that Groff is JJ’s biological father: JJ’s birth mother was Larissa Genrette, and Groff was his real father.

Why does JJ give up the Blue Crown?
JJ chooses Kiara and his friends over the treasure. Rudy Pankow described the character’s loyalty this way: “He would put his friends before himself.” The choice fits JJ’s established devotion to the Pogues, but the important plot fact is specific: he gives Groff the crown in exchange for Kiara’s safety.
Why does Groff kill JJ after taking the crown?
Groff kills JJ despite having received what he wanted and having agreed to spare Kiara. Netflix’s interview with Pankow and the show’s creators presents the stabbing as a cruel betrayal; co-creator Shannon Burke said, “The intent is to make us hate Groff.” That describes the creators’ intended effect, not a measured claim about every viewer’s reaction. Was JJ’s death planned?
The creators said they had planned for JJ to die during the series. Co-creator Josh Pate called the decision difficult and said it would lead into a final season focused on redemption and the friendship JJ represented. Pankow also said, “He lives his life to the utmost fullest, and I don’t think he regrets any part of it.” These are the creators’ and actor’s interpretations of the character and story direction, rather than additional plot events.

The Season 4 finale is Episode 10, “The Blue Crown.” Netflix’s July 24, 2026 recap says the remaining Pogues grieve JJ and begin planning revenge. That recap described Season 5 as the fifth and final season and said it was scheduled to return on Aug. 20, 2026; the announced date does not establish current availability in every region.
