Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is Season 4 called the penultimate season?
“Penultimate” means second-to-last. Season 4 held that position in the series chronology when it premiered in 2024. Netflix’s 2026 cast guide describes Season 5 as the fifth and final season and says it is streaming, so Season 4 is no longer the latest season. See Netflix’s current cast guide for that status.

Co-creator Josh Pate explained the thinking behind that outcome to Netflix Tudum: “We knew we needed to give them a win, but it ended up being a complicated one.” More cast and character background appears in Netflix Tudum’s Outer Banks cast guide.
