1. Poguelandia was never a safe haven
Season 3 begins with John B, Sarah, JJ, Kiara, Pope, and Cleo stranded on a deserted island they call Poguelandia. Their apparent rescue turns dangerous when the pilot tries to kidnap them. They escape, but soon find themselves caught up in the threat surrounding Carlos Singh in Barbados. Netflix’s Season 3 recap lays out how quickly the island interlude gives way to another treasure hunt.
2. Carlos Singh is hunting El Dorado
Singh believes Denmark Tanny’s diary can help him locate El Dorado, the legendary lost city. The clues connect this hunt to the earlier Royal Merchant story and the Cross of Santo Domingo, making the new search a continuation of the Pogues’ old mysteries rather than a fresh start.

3. Big John is alive—and John B finds him
John B’s father survived and is in Barbados. He gets his son’s attention with the bell pattern he used when John B was a child, and the two reunite. Singh had rescued Big John and wants his help finding El Dorado.
4. Big John pulls John B away from the Pogues
Big John persuades his son to keep pursuing Denmark Tanny’s diary without telling the others. Their partnership becomes a source of tension: Big John increasingly puts the treasure first, while John B’s friends—and Sarah—are shut out. The reunion John B wanted therefore makes it harder for him to stay loyal to the group.
5. The Gnomon of Solana points the way
The route to El Dorado depends on several pieces fitting together: Denmark Tanny’s diary, an artifact recovered in Charleston, and a map from Neville. Professor Sowell identifies the artifact as the Gnomon of Solana, which points toward the city under the right conditions. The clue trail turns the hunt into a puzzle the group must solve together.
6. Sarah’s relationship with John B is tested
John B’s distance helps drive Sarah back toward Topper, but she ultimately returns to John B. She also helps secure Ward’s plane for the expedition. The creators describe Sarah as central to solving the final clues and earning Big John’s trust; her role is not just to follow John B into the hunt. The creators’ finale interview with Netflix Tudum discusses her importance to the ending.
7. JJ and Kiara grow closer
Kiara’s parents send her to Kitty Hawk, a wilderness therapy program. JJ breaks her out, and the two kiss before heading south on a separate route. Meanwhile, Pope and Cleo help interpret the signpost clues, keeping the larger search a team effort even when the Pogues are not all traveling together.
8. The Pogues reach El Dorado, but lose Ward and Big John
The group follows the Gnomon and Denmark Tanny’s notes to the city. Sarah and John B work out how to find the way through the dark using the clue, “The true and patient seeker needs not light to see.” The Pogues emerge with gold, but the victory is devastating: Singh dies in an explosion, Ward sacrifices himself to save Sarah, and Big John dies from his injuries.

9. The finale jumps ahead 18 months
In the epilogue, the Pogues receive public recognition for finding El Dorado. The creators say the jump moves the characters beyond school and opens a new chapter, while leaving room for the audience to imagine what happened in the intervening months. Josh Pate called the first three seasons a trilogy and said the jump was meant to “clear the decks” for the next phase. Shannon Burke said that, amid the action, “it’s really about the bond between the friends.” Both comments come from the Tudum interview linked above.

Back in the Outer Banks, a stranger brings the group a captain’s log belonging to Blackbeard. That is the finale’s forward-looking hook: after El Dorado, the Pogues have a new mystery in front of them. Netflix’s Season 4 coverage guide marks the next chapter’s context, but this recap stops with the Season 3 setup.
