Spoilers for the Stranger Things series finale. Season 5 has aired, so the question of who would die is now a retrospective one. The finale gives clear answers for Vecna and the Mind Flayer, an apparent answer for Kali, and no definitive answer about Eleven. Here is how the pre-release theories compare with what the story ultimately showed.
What happened to the characters fans feared losing?
Netflix’s finale explainer distinguishes between confirmed outcomes and deliberate uncertainty. The story does not leave every fate equally settled.

Why did the finale leave Eleven’s fate open?
Kali had proposed that she and Eleven remain in the Upside Down as it collapsed. Her reasoning was to keep the military from using Eleven’s blood to create more children with powers. Eleven says goodbye to Mike and appears to carry out that plan.
The final Dungeons & Dragons story complicates that apparent sacrifice. Mike imagines that Kali used an illusion to help Eleven escape, and the Duffer Brothers leave the audience to decide whether that hopeful version is true. The finale therefore supports neither a definite death nor a confirmed survival.

What could fans reasonably predict before Season 5?
Before the final season aired, Netflix described the setting as fall 1987: Hawkins was scarred by the Rifts, under military quarantine, and facing a vanished Vecna. Its official season listing framed the coming fight as a united effort by the full party to find and kill him.
That setup made sacrifice theories plausible, but it did not identify a doomed character. In an October 16, 2025 TIME interview, Matt Duffer said, “It’s important that every death resonates in a big way.” He also said the creators are careful about whom they kill because deaths have “massive season-long ripple effects.” Those comments describe a storytelling principle, not evidence that a particular character would die.

Fans also speculated about a pattern: central members of the ensemble often seemed safer than characters who became prominent for a single season. That was a basis for discussion, not a rule. A stronger retrospective asks what was actually known before release, how a possible death would affect the survivors, and whether the finale confirmed, merely suggested, or left the outcome open.
How did the deaths serve the ending?
Joyce’s role in defeating Vecna
Joyce delivers the decisive blow against Vecna. Ross Duffer explained that the choice connected to her place in the series: in Season 1, she was the first character to act and believe that something strange was happening. Her role in the finale makes the victory part of her story, not only a battlefield outcome.

The ensemble and the cost of the battle
The group defeats the Mind Flayer, and their effort rescues the children. The finale does not reduce its ending to a list of fatalities: it also shows what the surviving friends carry forward after the danger ends.
The last D&D game
Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max finish one last D&D campaign in the Wheeler basement. Holly and her friends arrive to begin their own. Matt Duffer described the moment as the original group leaving childhood behind and passing the torch; Ross Duffer called it a goodbye to their childhood. The shift gives the ending a coming-of-age emphasis alongside its losses.
