His first honest disclosure to Akane gives the episode an intimate center, while her response—and the request she makes of him—keeps their relationship from becoming a one-sided confession. Set amid the Tokyo Blade stage-play arc, the conversation matters because private feelings and public performance are beginning to press on each other.
Episode details and spoiler scope
This is Season 2, Episode 5, and the series’ overall Episode 16. Its Japanese title is 開幕; the official anime page gives the English rendering “The Beginning,” while Rotten Tomatoes lists it as “The Curtain Rises.” Rotten Tomatoes lists the air date as July 31, 2024. The review below stays with the episode’s central setup and does not describe later outcomes.
The official episode synopsis centers on Aqua explaining why he keeps acting despite believing he has no talent, then on Akane’s reply and what she asks of him as her boyfriend. ORICON’s July 30, 2024 report identifies the same installment and premise. (Official episode synopsis and credits; ORICON episode report; Rotten Tomatoes episode listing)
Why Aqua’s conversation with Akane is the episode’s anchor
The most consequential development is not simply that Aqua talks about himself; it is that he lets Akane hear something the official synopsis characterizes as his true feelings, shared with her for the first time. That framing gives the scene emotional weight before any broader plot turn: Aqua’s self-description as untalented sits uneasily beside the fact that he continues to pursue acting.

Akane’s response gives the exchange a reciprocal shape. She is not only there to receive Aqua’s explanation; she also asks something of him. That makes their relationship feel like an active negotiation between two people, rather than a pause in which one character’s vulnerability exists only to serve the other. The published summaries establish those story beats, though the impact of the performances and scene direction is ultimately a matter of how the episode plays on screen.
Private doubts in the middle of Tokyo Blade
The conversation takes place within the Tokyo Blade stage-play arc, where acting is both a profession and part of the characters’ personal struggles. The official Season 2 overview describes Aqua using acting while pursuing the truth about Ai’s death, and places the play’s rehearsals alongside the performers’ pressures and rivalries. That context makes his admission especially pointed: the activity he doubts himself in is also bound up with his larger purpose.

Akane’s position adds another layer. The season overview explicitly identifies her rivalry with Kana, so her personal connection with Aqua sits within a competitive ensemble rather than outside it. This episode’s premise offers room to consider how the emotional exchange shapes the atmosphere around the play, but it does not establish that the rivalry is resolved or explain later developments. What makes the episode heat up
Emotional openness
Aqua’s admission creates a clear measure of change: he is sharing more with Akane than his usual guarded presentation suggests. The scene’s potential strength lies in making that openness feel like a meaningful act without pretending his doubts are suddenly settled.

Reciprocity
Akane’s answer and her boyfriend-duty request give the exchange a second direction. The episode’s central question is not only what Aqua is willing to reveal, but what the two of them expect from one another after he does.
Connection to the stage-play arc
The Tokyo Blade setting gives the relationship scene stakes beyond romance. Aqua’s private uncertainty about acting and the ensemble’s public preparation for performance occupy the same story space, inviting the viewer to read them together rather than as unrelated threads.

Rivalry and ensemble pressure
Akane’s established rivalry with Kana gives her place in the play a competitive edge. The episode can sharpen that context simply by keeping personal bonds and professional ambition in view at once; the official season overview does not support claiming that this installment settles their rivalry.

Verdict
Episode 5’s strongest hook is the contrast at its center: Aqua doubts his ability, yet keeps acting, and he chooses to explain that contradiction to Akane. Her response makes the moment a conversation rather than a confession delivered into a void. Framed by Tokyo Blade’s rehearsals and rivalries, the episode’s emotional turn has a natural connection to the season’s performance-driven story.
