The 96th Academy Awards red carpet took place on March 10, 2024, and its standout looks balanced classic glamour with selective drama: sculptural gowns, vivid pink, sleek black, and statement-making menswear. There was no official Academy best-dressed ranking; the selections below reflect fashion editors’ judgments and reporting from the night.
Who was best dressed at the 2024 Oscars?
Fashion publications highlighted different stars, so “best dressed” is an editorial judgment rather than an official result. British Vogue singled out Zendaya, Greta Lee, and Ariana Grande; Vanity Fair also published its own selection of standout celebrities. Across those looks, the carpet’s range ran from sleek restraint to dramatic volume.
- Zendaya in Armani Privé: British Vogue counted her glamorous gown among the evening’s standout looks. British Vogue’s red-carpet gallery.
- Greta Lee in Loewe: British Vogue highlighted the ultra-sleek look, a streamlined counterpoint to the evening’s fuller silhouettes. British Vogue’s red-carpet gallery.
- Ariana Grande in Giambattista Valli: Her dramatic silhouette brought a more theatrical sense of volume to the carpet. British Vogue’s red-carpet gallery.
What did Zendaya wear to the Oscars?
Zendaya wore a glamorous Armani Privé gown, one of British Vogue’s standout looks from the ceremony carpet. The selection exemplified the evening’s polished approach: a high-impact designer gown without needing to rely on the carpet’s most exaggerated shapes.
Which gowns defined the evening?
Pastels and sculptural details
Emma Stone wore a soft pastel, strapless Louis Vuitton gown with a faint shell pattern and a wide peplum. The Associated Press described the design and Time called its shade pistachio, pairing a muted color with a sculptural outline. Associated Press coverage; Time’s red-carpet report.
#1 Best Overall
Sandra Hüller’s Schiaparelli gown occupied a more conceptual register. Vogue called it “wearable art” and reported that the moodboard behind it involved Louis Vuitton, Bottega Veneta, and Schiaparelli. Vogue on Sandra Hüller’s gown.
Pink, black, and a change of mood
America Ferrera wore a sparkly, Barbie-pink Atelier Versace gown, a vivid color statement described by the Associated Press. Associated Press coverage.
Rank #2
Margot Robbie took a different direction from the Barbiecore association of the previous year in a sleek black Versace chainmail gown, as Time noted. Its dark, reflective surface made the look feel more restrained than a bright pink interpretation of her film’s visual world. Time’s red-carpet report.
Runway romance, made couture
Jennifer Lawrence wore Dior Couture. Vogue reported that the dress took 1,500 hours to make, and Lawrence explained her connection to it: “When I first saw the dress on the runway I fell in love.” Vogue on Lawrence’s Dior Couture dress.

How did the men’s tailoring stand out?
Colman Domingo’s custom double-breasted Louis Vuitton tuxedo made proportion and accessories part of the statement. The Associated Press noted cowboy boots and a jewel at the bow tie; Time also drew attention to the wide-leg shape and jewelry. Instead of relying on a conventional narrow trouser and plain formal shoe, the look mixed a tailored tuxedo with distinctive footwear and ornament. Associated Press coverage; Time’s red-carpet report.
What cultural collaboration shaped Lily Gladstone’s look?
Lily Gladstone wore a custom Gucci gown created in collaboration with Indigenous designer Joe Big Mountain, according to the Associated Press. Vanity Fair connected the Gucci gown and Bulgari styling to Gladstone’s Native American heritage. Naming the collaborator matters: the look was not simply a designer’s reference to Indigenous culture, but a collaboration involving an Indigenous designer. Associated Press coverage; Vanity Fair on Gladstone’s look.

How closely did Oscars fashion follow the runway?
The runway-to-carpet connection was unusually visible in 2024. Vogue reported that Joey King wore a Balenciaga look seen on the runway the previous week. Emma Stone later changed into a Louis Vuitton look from Nicolas Ghesquière’s anniversary show at the Vanity Fair after-party. That later outfit belongs to the party, not the Oscars ceremony carpet. Vogue on runway looks worn around the Oscars.
The mix of recent runway pieces and elaborate couture construction showed two different routes from designer fashion to the red carpet: a look could arrive almost directly from a show, or be made through extensive custom work, as Vogue reported for Lawrence’s Dior gown.

Why did editors’ best-dressed lists differ?
There was no Academy-issued ranking to settle the question. Publications emphasized their own criteria, and individual style could matter as much as spectacle. Harper’s Bazaar fashion news director Brooke Bobb, quoted by the Associated Press, put it this way: “Embracing personal style really is the only way to land on the best-dressed list these days.” Associated Press coverage. The strongest looks were not all alike: sleek Loewe, dramatic Giambattista Valli, sculptural Louis Vuitton, and expressive tailoring all offered different answers to what makes a red-carpet outfit memorable.
