The King of Kings is a 2025 animated film about Jesus, framed as a story a father tells his son. Oscar Isaac voices Jesus; the film also draws inspiration from Charles Dickens’s The Life of Our Lord. For viewers deciding whether to watch, the key details are its family framing, its PG content descriptors, and the fact that streaming and storefront availability can vary by territory and date.
What is The King of Kings about?
A father tells his son Walter the story of Jesus, and the bedtime tale becomes an imaginative journey in which the boy walks alongside Jesus. Walter witnesses miracles, sees Jesus face trials, and encounters the story’s themes of sacrifice. Angel Studios describes it as a father-and-son frame around Jesus’s life rather than simply a sequence of biblical events. Angel Studios’ film listing provides the distributor’s synopsis.
Does Oscar Isaac play Jesus?
Yes. Oscar Isaac voices Jesus Christ. The voice cast also includes Kenneth Branagh as Charles Dickens, Uma Thurman as Catherine Dickens, and Roman Griffin Davis as Walter Dickens. Other credited roles include Pierce Brosnan as Pontius Pilate, Mark Hamill as King Herod, Ben Kingsley as High Priest Caiaphas, and Forest Whitaker as Peter. Seong-Ho Jang is credited as director, writer, and producer. The credits are listed by Angel Studios Distribution.
How is Charles Dickens connected to the film?
The film is inspired by Dickens’s The Life of Our Lord; that does not establish it as a faithful or exact adaptation of the book. The Korean Film Council identifies the work as the inspiration and reports that director and scriptwriter Jang Seong-ho chose Jesus’s life for his debut feature because he saw a gap in major animated films dedicated to Jesus. Its report on Jang places the project in the context of South Korean animation.

Is The King of Kings suitable for children?
The film is rated PG for “thematic material, violent content, and some scary moments,” according to Angel’s FAQ. Its animation and father-and-son framing do not remove the intensity of its subject: the story includes Jesus’s trials and ultimate sacrifice. Parents and caregivers should use the official descriptors, and their knowledge of a child’s sensitivity to frightening or violent scenes, rather than assuming animation means it will be comfortable for every age.
Where can you watch it?
Availability depends on territory, date, and whether you want membership streaming or a storefront purchase or rental. Angel’s FAQ, updated July 15, 2026, says the film is streaming on the Angel App and angel.com for Angel Guild members. It says the movie opened theatrically in the United States and Canada on April 11, 2025, with international releases following. Check Angel’s current FAQ for its membership access details.

Angel Studios announced that premium electronic sell-through and premium video on demand would begin May 27, 2025, exclusively on Apple TV and Fandango at Home. That dated announcement establishes the planned release at that time, not the stores’ current availability or terms. Check the live listing for your country before choosing a viewing option; the May 22, 2025 announcement gives the original home-release details.

Listings do not give one consistent runtime, so use the number shown by the service or cinema in your territory. Angel’s FAQ gives 1 hour 40 minutes, Angel Studios Distribution lists 1 hour 41 minutes, and Apple TV’s US listing gives 1 hour 43 minutes. These are listing figures, not a claim that all versions or territories have the same runtime: see the Angel FAQ, Angel Distribution listing, and Apple TV US listing.
