Oracle Cloud Firewall Ports and YouTube RTMP/RTMPS Streaming Setup

YouTube encoder streaming from OCI is an outbound connection. Learn which firewall layers to check, how to configure RTMPS and a stream key, and how to diagnose timeouts and unhealthy streams.

For a YouTube stream sent from an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) instance, check outbound connectivity—not an inbound RTMP port. The encoder pushes video to YouTube, so verify the instance’s egress route, applicable OCI security-list and network security group (NSG) rules, and its operating-system firewall. Prefer YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint; if an SSL error persists, YouTube advises trying port 443.

First identify where the encoder runs

OCI firewall changes matter only if the encoder is running on the OCI instance. If OBS or another encoder runs on your own computer, its connection to YouTube uses that computer’s network; changing an OCI rule will not fix the local computer’s outbound connection.

For an encoder on OCI Compute, identify the instance’s VNIC and subnet, then determine how that subnet reaches the internet or the configured destination. Depending on the design, egress may use an internet gateway, NAT gateway, proxy, or another route. There is no single route-table recipe that applies to every OCI deployment.

Which OCI firewall ports should you open for YouTube RTMP?

For an encoder pushing a stream to YouTube, allow the outbound connection to the actual ingestion URL and protocol displayed in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted extension to RTMP. If an RTMPS SSL error persists, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to try port 443. This is specific guidance for that error, not a claim that every endpoint uses one fixed port or hostname. YouTube’s encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance covers the protocol recommendation.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

You generally do not need to open an inbound RTMP listener on the OCI instance for this push-stream setup. An inbound rule is relevant only if your architecture actually accepts incoming contributions or serves an application. Keep streaming egress distinct from administrative access such as SSH or RDP.

Check OCI security lists, NSGs, and egress

OCI has two VCN packet-level controls that may apply to an instance. Security lists attach to a subnet and affect its VNICs; NSGs apply to selected VNICs. Oracle recommends NSGs when you want to separate application security requirements from subnet layout. Both types of rules can apply together, so inspect every relevant layer rather than adding a rule to an unrelated list. A VNIC can be associated with up to five NSGs. See Oracle’s Security Rules documentation.

  • Confirm the egress path: Check the subnet route and the gateway, proxy, or other configured path used to reach YouTube.
  • Inspect attached OCI rules: Review outbound rules in the security lists associated with the subnet and in every NSG attached to the instance’s VNIC. Make sure the rules allow the encoder’s actual destination and protocol.
  • Account for statefulness: OCI’s default security list includes broad stateful egress and stateful SSH ingress; return traffic is tracked for connections initiated under a stateful rule. Custom policies can differ. Do not expose SSH or RDP to the world for convenience; restrict administrative ingress to authorized source addresses.
  • Check DNS and the guest firewall: Confirm the instance can resolve the ingestion hostname and that its operating-system firewall permits the required outbound connection.

VCN rules and the guest firewall are separate controls. Oracle advises aligning host firewall rules with security-list and NSG rules. For Oracle Linux-family images, Oracle documents firewall-cmd examples for opening a port; its example uses port 1521, which is not a YouTube streaming instruction. Adapt host policy to the real requirement and the operating system in use. See Oracle’s firewall-cmd guidance.

Set the YouTube stream URL and key in your encoder

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live / Live Control Room. Select the Stream tab or create or schedule a stream, depending on your workflow.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the matching server URL and stream key fields in your encoder. Use the RTMPS preset if the encoder provides one. Otherwise, retrieve the RTMPS URL through the lock icon in YouTube’s Stream settings and enter it as the server URL. The exact endpoint should come from your own Live Control Room, not from a hard-coded example.
  3. Keep the stream key private: YouTube treats it like a password and address. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
  4. Start the encoder output. Wait for YouTube to receive a preview and check stream health; depending on the workflow, select Go live after the preview is ready.

For YouTube’s workflow details, see Go live with an encoder and encoder settings and stream troubleshooting. A reachable port cannot fix a wrong server URL, stale or mismatched key, unsupported protocol, or incompatible encoder settings.

Choose YouTube encoder settings for your connection

Use the codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate appropriate for the video and the upload capacity available to the encoder. YouTube’s published settings support RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant-bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its advanced recommendations include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not independent test results. See YouTube’s current encoder settings.

The following figures are bitrate settings published by YouTube Help; the page does not state a publication year. They are not a speed test or a universal bitrate requirement. Match each figure to its codec, resolution, and frame rate, then check that your available upload capacity can sustain the stream reliably.

Troubleshoot common connection and preview failures

  • Connection timed out: Recheck the copied server URL and selected protocol, confirm the encoder supports RTMPS if you chose it, and verify DNS, the OCI subnet’s egress route, applicable OCI outbound rules, and the guest firewall. If the encoder is local rather than on OCI, check the local network’s egress instead.
  • SSL or certificate error: Confirm the server URL is the RTMPS URL, not an RTMP URL. If the SSL error persists, YouTube advises trying port 443.
  • No preview or rejected stream: Verify the key belongs to the selected event and is current, then check the server URL, protocol, and encoder settings. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
  • Intermittent or unhealthy stream: Compare actual upload capacity with the YouTube bitrate setting for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Recheck encoding settings and monitor stream health; a rule change cannot compensate for an overloaded or unreliable uplink.
  • Cannot connect to the instance for administration: Treat this separately from YouTube streaming. Inspect the intended SSH or RDP ingress rule, allowed source CIDR, subnet security lists, attached NSGs, route, and guest firewall. Do not solve an administrative-access problem by broadly exposing the instance.

Or let it run in the cloud
