Full-spoiler warning: This recap reveals the complete plot and ending of Rebecca Yarros’s Onyx Storm, the third Empyrean novel, including deaths, venin transformations, the secret marriage, and the final cliff-hangers. The book includes war, intense violence, brutal injuries, poisoning, death, graphic language, and sexual content.
Onyx Storm turns Xaden’s venin condition into the central military and emotional crisis while Violet searches for allies beyond Aretia’s failing wards. Its ending confirms a secret marriage and a devastating memory gap, but leaves Xaden’s final condition, the missing eggs, and the events of twelve erased hours unresolved.
How Onyx Storm begins
1. Xaden is already a venin initiate
After channeling power directly from the earth during the previous battle, Xaden begins Onyx Storm as a venin initiate. He is frightened that using that power again will push him beyond his ability to control himself. Violet conceals the truth with a small circle of allies while searching for a cure. Jack Barlowe gives her the bleakest answer available: no known cure exists.
2. Aretia’s wards may last only six months
Mira estimates that the Aretian wards can hold for no more than roughly six months. Violet and Andarna therefore pursue the lost dragon kind, hoping these rare dragons can help defend the territory or provide a way to defeat the venin.

Political betrayal and the widening war
3. Violet secretly changes the wardstone
Violet and her allies alter Aretia’s wardstone so gryphon fliers can use their lesser magic inside the wards. General Aetos treats the change as treason, but the decision allows the Navarre–Poromiel alliance to operate together and helps save it from collapse.
4. Theophanie makes Violet her target
Theophanie, a silver-haired venin maven who wields storm power, tries to recruit Violet and takes a particular interest in Andarna. Later, she kidnaps Mira and demands that Violet and Jack come to her. The pursuit turns a political conflict into a personal one.
5. Violet follows her father’s coded research
Dain helps Violet steal her father’s research. A letter sends her to Deverelli, where she finds an artifact and books connected with the irids, the mysterious dragon kind her father had been investigating.

Missions that cost lives
6. The first Anca mission ends in disaster
Violet’s first expedition to Anca loses Grady and Aura. After that failure, she takes command of future missions herself. The danger continues when Courtlyn murders Anna Winshire and feeds her body to panthers.

The search for military help becomes a series of dangerous bargains:
- Unnbriel demands twelve dragon eggs in exchange for assistance.
- Hedotis subjects the group to a poison test and introduces Xaden’s mother.
- Zehyllna costs the group Trager, but a ritual game wins them an army of forty thousand troops.
The irids and Andarna’s choice
8. The lost dragons are the irids
The rare seventh dragon breed is called the irids. They view Andarna as a test of whether humans and dragons can coexist peacefully. They condemn her participation in the war and refuse to provide a cure for Xaden’s venin condition. Their refusal is a major setback: the legendary dragons will not simply join the human side.
Rank #3
9. Andarna leaves Violet, then returns
During the assault on Aretia, Andarna chooses to leave with the irids and breaks her bond with Violet. She later returns by her own choice when Violet needs her. The separation is not permanent, but Andarna’s return is a decision rather than an obligation imposed by the original bond.
Violet’s second signet and the final battle
10. Violet is a dream-walker
Violet’s recurring dreams with Xaden are not prophecies. Her second signet allows her to enter the dreams of people she loves. That ability makes her an inntinnsic and may give her a way to reach Xaden even after the events at the end of the book.

12. The battle reveals a traitor—and another venin
Commandant Panchek is exposed as the mole. Sage Berwyn survives the battle, and the final revelations indicate that someone close to Xaden has also become venin. The identity and full implications of that additional transformation remain unknown.
13. Quinn dies, while Mira barely survives
Quinn is among those killed in the battle. Ridoc destroys a wyvern by freezing it from the inside. Theophanie cuts Mira’s throat, but Brennan’s mending and Sloane’s siphoning save her from death.

14. Violet loses twelve hours of memory
After the battle, Violet wakes to discover that twelve hours are missing from her memory. Imogen erased that period at Violet’s own request. The exact reason for the erasure—and what happened during those hours—is still a central mystery.
15. Violet and Xaden are secretly married, but Xaden disappears
Violet finds a ring and legal documents proving that she and Xaden married in secret. She is therefore the Duchess of Tyrrendor. But the revelation arrives after Xaden has vanished. Their bond appears to be gone, six dragon eggs are missing, and evidence points to the murders of riders and dragons.
What the ending confirms—and what it withholds
The ending confirms Violet and Xaden’s marriage, Violet’s dream-walking signet, the existence of the irids, Panchek’s betrayal, and the death of Theophanie. It does not explain the erased twelve hours, identify the additional venin close to Xaden, establish whether Xaden becomes fully venin, or reveal where he has gone with the missing eggs. Those unresolved questions are the book’s main bridge into the next Empyrean installment.
