Spoiler warning: This article reveals the endings of Onyx Storm, Iron Flame, and Fourth Wing. The direct answer is that Violet wins the battle against Theophanie, while Xaden saves Sgaeyl by drawing directly from the earth and becomes much more deeply venin. Violet later discovers that they are married—but her memories of the arrangement have been removed, and Xaden has disappeared.

Spoilers for Onyx Storm, Iron Flame, and Fourth Wing follow. This is a full explanation of the Book 3 ending, including Xaden’s transformation, Violet’s missing memories, the surprise marriage, the unidentified venin, and the major questions left for the next main novel.

The short version of the Onyx Storm ending

Violet kills Theophanie during the defense of Draithus after Andarna returns to her. At the same time, Xaden saves Sgaeyl by drawing power directly from the earth—the same forbidden source associated with the venin. That choice pushes his transformation much further, leaving him effectively, or very nearly, fully venin.

Xaden does not completely lose himself. In his point-of-view chapter, he hears Violet say that she loves him and manages to hold on to part of his identity. But the novel does not establish that love has cured him, nor does it reveal whether a cure exists.

After the battle, Violet wakes in Aretia with twelve hours of memories removed at her own request. She discovers that she and Xaden are legally married and that she is now Duchess of Tyrrendor. Xaden has disappeared with Sgaeyl, several riders are missing, and six dragon eggs are gone. His note to Violet says, “It’s yours now.”

In other words, the ending is a separation cliffhanger rather than a final breakup or a definitive tragedy. Violet and Xaden are married and still emotionally connected, but Xaden has gone deeper into venin corruption and left Violet with the political responsibility, the missing pieces of the plan, and the task of finding out whether he can be saved.

If you want to check the details against the source before reading further, Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros is the third Empyrean novel. This article is not a substitute for the book: the ending depends heavily on withheld information and point-of-view changes.

What happens in the final battle?

The climax takes place during the defense of Draithus. Violet and Tairn pursue Theophanie, a powerful venin maven with silver hair. Theophanie is not simply another lightning wielder: her power is tied to storms, making her a particularly dangerous opponent for Violet.

Violet loses her dagger during the attack. She then uses the replacement dagger sent by Aaric. The weapon is important not only because it gives Violet another chance to fight, but because the circumstances help her recognize that Aaric’s signet involves a form of precognition. The book does not treat his ability as ordinary battlefield luck.

Violet is nearly overwhelmed until Andarna returns. Andarna had left Violet to learn from the irids, whose judgment reflects one of the novel’s larger conflicts: dragons resent being treated by humans as military instruments. Her return demonstrates that her bond with Violet has not been permanently broken. With Andarna’s help, Violet kills Theophanie.

How does Xaden defeat Berwyn?

Xaden’s battle happens at the same time. Berwyn—the venin sage connected to Xaden’s transformation—has trapped and injured Sgaeyl beneath a net. Xaden chooses to save his dragon and the people around him by channeling directly from the earth.

That distinction matters. Xaden is not merely using power through his dragon bond. He is drawing from the source associated with venin power itself, repeating and intensifying the dangerous choice he made at the end of Iron Flame.

The resulting surge of shadow power turns the battle. It destroys wyvern and kills or incapacitates venin, including Berwyn and the unnamed venin whom Xaden recognizes as his new “brother.” Xaden succeeds tactically, but the victory comes at the cost of his remaining human stability.

Does Xaden become fully venin?

The novel strongly suggests that Xaden is now effectively, or nearly, fully venin. His transformation has advanced far beyond a temporary contamination or an abstract risk. He channels directly from the earth to save Sgaeyl, and the ending treats that act as a decisive escalation.

However, “fully venin” does not mean that Xaden becomes mindless or immediately loses every trace of his former self. In his point-of-view chapter, he hears Violet tell him that she loves him. That emotional connection allows him to retain part of himself.

The safest interpretation is that Violet’s love functions as an anchor, not a cure. Nothing in the ending proves that love reverses venin transformation. Xaden remains dangerously changed, and the question of whether he can be restored to humanity is deliberately reserved for a later book.

Why does Violet lose her memories?

Violet’s memory loss is intentional. When she wakes twelve hours after the battle, Imogen confirms that she removed the memories because Violet asked her to do it.

This is different from an accidental consequence of the battle or a random magical side effect. Violet deliberately chose not to remember the immediate aftermath. The book does not reveal the complete reason, but the missing information presumably involves Xaden’s plan, their marriage, or both.

The memory wipe also explains why Violet discovers her marriage indirectly. She wakes in Aretia wearing a wedding ring and learns that a legal document from Dunne’s temple recognizes her marriage to Xaden and her position as Duchess of Tyrrendor. She is not learning that the marriage was a fantasy or a manipulation: it is legally real within the novel. What she cannot remember is how and why it happened.

Why did Xaden marry Violet?

Onyx Storm confirms the marriage but withholds the full explanation. Violet and Xaden are legally married before Xaden disappears, yet Violet’s removed memories prevent readers from seeing the complete conversation, ceremony, or agreement.

The strongest reading is that the marriage serves both a personal and a political purpose:

  • Personally, it formalizes Xaden’s commitment to Violet before he leaves and becomes more deeply corrupted.
  • Politically, it makes Violet Duchess of Tyrrendor and places the province’s future in her hands while Xaden is absent.

The ending does not establish that the marriage is solely a magical safeguard, a succession maneuver, or a mechanism connected to a cure. Those ideas may be plausible theories, but they are not confirmed facts.

What does “It’s yours now” mean?

Xaden’s note is deliberately ambiguous. The direct meaning is that he is handing Violet responsibility for Tyrrendor and its political future. His disappearance leaves her with the authority associated with her new position as duchess.

The phrase may also point to a wider inheritance: leadership of the rebellion, control of its infrastructure, or responsibility for the next phase of the war. But the text does not specify what the pronoun “it” includes. Treating the note as proof of one particular magical or succession-based plan goes beyond what the ending establishes.

Who is Xaden’s new venin “brother”?

The identity is not revealed. During the final confrontation, Xaden realizes that a close male ally has become venin after watching Xaden struggle with his own transformation for roughly five months. His reaction is horror, suggesting that this is someone he knows well and never expected to lose.

Garrick and Bodhi are the leading candidates discussed by readers and explainers because both are close to Xaden and neither has a fully accounted-for status at the end. Garrick is explicitly missing, while Bodhi’s status is also ambiguous. Nevertheless, the novel does not confirm either man as the unnamed “brother.”

Panchek should not automatically be identified as this person. The ending separately establishes that Panchek betrayed Navarre and the riders by supplying tactical information to the venin in exchange for power. His betrayal and the unnamed close ally’s new transformation are presented as distinct developments.

Who is missing at the end?

Violet learns that Xaden is missing along with several riders, including Garrick. Six dragon eggs are also gone. The final accounting is intentionally incomplete, creating several connected mysteries:

  • Where did Xaden and Sgaeyl go?
  • Which riders left or were taken with them?
  • Is Garrick the unnamed venin “brother,” or is he missing for another reason?
  • What happened to the six dragon eggs?
  • Who has custody of the eggs, and why are they important to Xaden’s plan?

The book does not identify every missing rider or explain the destination and purpose of the eggs. Any detailed answer about those points remains speculation.

What happens to Andarna?

Andarna initially leaves Violet to learn from the irids. Their criticism—that Andarna is evidence humanity has turned dragons into weapons—connects her personal journey to the novel’s broader argument about dragon autonomy and human militarization.

Andarna returns at the critical moment of the battle and helps Violet defeat Theophanie. That return confirms that the bond between Andarna and Violet has survived the separation. It also suggests that Andarna’s independence does not require her to abandon Violet permanently.

Is the ending tragic or hopeful?

It is best understood as a separation cliffhanger. Xaden and Violet are not definitively broken up, and neither character is confirmed dead. Their marriage and their emotional connection remain real.

At the same time, the novel makes the situation substantially worse before offering any hope. Violet has lost the memories that would explain the plan, Xaden has gone deeper into venin power, Sgaeyl has been injured, and the couple is separated just after becoming legally bound to each other. The central romance has effectively become a rescue problem: Violet must find Xaden, reconstruct what happened, and determine whether the part of him that remains can be saved.

What comes next in the Empyrean series?

Onyx Storm is Book 3 of Rebecca Yarros’s Empyrean series, not the conclusion of the overall story. The announced Threshing Day, scheduled for September 29, 2026, is a collection of thirteen character-and-dragon stories. It is additional Empyrean-world material, but it is not the main Book 4 continuation of Violet and Xaden’s plot. A release date for the actual fourth novel has not been announced in the latest information available for this article.

An Empyrean adaptation has also been ordered for Prime Video, with Yarros serving as an executive producer. That is franchise news rather than an explanation of the novel’s ending, and a screen adaptation does not change the literary canon established in Onyx Storm.

For listeners who experienced the story in audio format, the Onyx Storm audiobook offers the same canonical ending in another format. Fans looking for licensed merchandise rather than plot information should note that companion products do not resolve the unanswered questions about Xaden, the eggs, or the missing riders.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Violet defeats Theophanie, but Xaden’s victory over Berwyn pushes him almost completely into venin transformation. Violet and Xaden are secretly married, she loses the memories of the arrangement at her own request, and Xaden disappears with Sgaeyl while several riders and six dragon eggs are unaccounted for. The book confirms the crisis but does not yet reveal Xaden’s cure, the identity of his venin “brother,” or the full meaning of his plan.
