In November 2023, adult-content creators Kay Manuel, Leilani May and Bonnie Blue faced criticism after promoting a plan to recruit 18-year-old male Schoolies attendees on Queensland’s Gold Coast to make explicit online content. May and Blue defended the campaign by saying participants would be adults, checked for ID, sober during filming and able to choose what they agreed to do. Those were the creators’ stated safeguards; the published reports do not independently confirm how many people participated or whether any proposed shoot took place.
What prompted the backlash?
PerthNow reported on 24 November 2023 that the creators had called for 18-year-old men attending Schoolies to take part in explicit content. The proposal drew criticism, including comparisons to a casting-couch setup. A follow-up report on 29 November covered the creators’ responses. PerthNow’s report describes the campaign and the public statements around it.
The creators said the idea followed messages from Schoolies attendees asking to film content. That is their account, not an independently verified explanation of how the recruitment began. The reports do not establish how many people took part, whether every proposed shoot happened, or whether any regulator investigated.
What did the creators say in their defence?
May and Blue argued that the men they sought to recruit were 18 and therefore adults. Blue said: “They’re not 17, we check ID, we have a process — they are consenting and they are signing consent forms.” May said participants had to be sober before filming and that they could decide what they were comfortable doing.

Why did critics question the campaign?
Critics focused on the possibility that young people with little experience could be pressured in a party setting, where alcohol, social expectations and the prospect of immediate attention or payment may affect decisions. They also raised the lasting consequences of having sexual material published online. The reports do not include independent interviews with participants that could establish how they experienced the approach or any filming.

Indy100 reproduced criticism from a fellow adult entertainer: “Just because you’re women, it doesn’t make it OK. And as a community and as an industry, we really should be doing better and holding each other accountable.” Indy100’s coverage reflects the argument that gender should not determine whether the recruitment is judged ethically.
What does Queensland guidance say about consent and intoxication?
Queensland Government guidance describes consent as a voluntary, informed agreement between equal partners. Consent must be communicated, checked if the activity changes and respected if it is withdrawn. A person who is asleep, unconscious or too intoxicated to consent cannot lawfully agree to sexual activity. Queensland’s consent guidance sets out these principles.

For Schoolies specifically, the Safer Schoolies service says consent to one activity, on one day or with one person does not automatically apply to another. It also says someone who is drunk or under the influence of drugs cannot give consent. Safer Schoolies’ consent advice makes clear that consent must apply to the specific activity in question.
Queensland’s affirmative-consent reforms commenced on 23 September 2024, after the 2023 campaign reports. Current government guidance says consent must be mutually communicated and that intoxication or impairment can remove a person’s capacity to consent. These later reforms should not be presented as rules already in force when the campaign was reported. The Queensland Government’s affirmative-consent information explains the reforms.

Are ID checks and consent forms enough?
No single safeguard answers every concern raised by this case. Checking identification can help establish age, but age alone does not establish that someone has capacity to consent at the time or is agreeing freely. A signed form records an agreement; it cannot replace clear, ongoing consent or make consent valid if a person is too intoxicated, pressured or later withdraws it.
The creators said they required sobriety and gave participants choices, but the public reports do not verify how those safeguards operated in practice. The distinction is between a process described in advance and evidence about what happened to any individual participant.
What support is available at Gold Coast Schoolies?
Queensland health guidance warns that alcohol and drugs can increase vulnerability to violence and non-consensual sexual activity. It also identifies police, ambulance and health supports available on the Gold Coast during Schoolies. Queensland’s Schoolies health guidance lists safety information and support options.
