Only Murders in the Building Season 4 makes a bold detour: it takes Charles, Oliver and Mabel from the Arconia to Hollywood, where a film adaptation of their podcast is in development, then brings that Hollywood machinery back into the building’s next murder investigation. The gamble mostly works. The season uses its doubles and celebrity-heavy cast to explore performance, adaptation and the trio’s public image, while the Sazz Pataki case gives the expansion a personal stake. The trade-off is a crowded mystery that can lose momentum amid all the meta commentary.
What changes in Season 4?
The story picks up after the shooting of Sazz Pataki, Charles’s longtime friend and stunt double. The trio must work out whether the intended target was Sazz or Charles. That question sends them to Los Angeles, where a studio is preparing a film based on their Only Murders podcast. The investigation eventually returns to the Arconia, where residents of the West Tower become part of the case.
That structure makes the Hollywood trip more than a change of scenery. Sazz’s work as a double connects the murder mystery to the film’s casting of doubles for the trio. The show is asking what happens when other people take over your story—and whether a version of you can ever be separated from the original.

Creator and showrunner John Hoffman described the move as a major challenge: “One of the biggest challenges we’ve ever had was coming to Los Angeles with our very deeply New York show,” including the challenge of maintaining its spirit. His account of the season’s design helps explain the risk: Hollywood is meant to enter and influence the Arconia, not simply provide a new backdrop. Why the Hollywood doubles matter
The film within the series casts Eugene Levy as Oliver, Eva Longoria as Mabel and Zach Galifianakis as Charles. They are not just famous visitors playing a quick joke on the audience; they are fictional counterparts whose presence invites comparison with the people they portray. The question is not only whether the casting is amusing, but what each double reflects about the trio’s personalities, anxieties and relationship to their own notoriety.

That self-conscious storytelling is the season’s most distinctive idea. The podcast has turned private grief and amateur sleuthing into entertainment; now a studio wants to turn that entertainment into another product. The adaptation plot lets the series tease Hollywood while also examining the way stories change when outsiders reshape them. When the doubles affect the investigation and the trio’s choices, the meta-fiction adds texture. When the parade of recognizable faces takes precedence, it risks feeling like a distraction from the murder.
Does the season keep the trio at its center?
Mostly. The familiar chemistry among Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez remains the season’s anchor, and the Los Angeles detour is connected to Charles through Sazz rather than imposed as an unrelated excursion. Returning to the Arconia and its West Tower residents also restores the show’s home-field atmosphere after the expansion. The setting change therefore has a route back to the series’ central relationships and its established mystery format.

The cast is unusually crowded. Alongside the core trio and Michael Cyril Creighton, the official Season 4 announcement names Meryl Streep, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Levy, Longoria, Galifianakis, Molly Shannon, Kumail Nanjiani, Melissa McCarthy and Richard Kind. The guest appearances bring comic and dramatic possibilities, but each new face also competes for attention and adds another person for the mystery to manage. Viewers who want a tightly focused suspect puzzle may find the season’s sprawl less satisfying than its character and performance games.
How well does the mystery work?
The Sazz case gives the season a compelling emotional question: was the shot meant for Charles, or did Sazz herself become the target? Its connection to Hollywood and the film adaptation is thematically neat, and the return to the Arconia grounds the investigation in the show’s familiar community. But the season’s attention is divided among suspects, celebrity doubles and commentary on adaptation. That density can soften the forward pull of the whodunit, even when the ideas around it are engaging.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls Season 4 “a more metatextual season full of famous faces” and says the series remains a delightful comedy. NPR’s David Bianculli similarly argued that the additional talent plays alongside the lead actors rather than outshining them. The overall critical picture is favorable, though not every review finds the mystery equally necessary or satisfying. The most persuasive case for the season is therefore not that every twist lands perfectly, but that the Hollywood conceit gives the show a fresh way to examine identity and storytelling without abandoning its central trio.

Where to watch Season 4
In the United States, Hulu’s current series listing includes Only Murders in the Building and lists five seasons. In the United Kingdom, Disney+ announced Season 4 as a Disney+ exclusive, with new episodes on Tuesdays during its 2024 release. Streaming catalogs can change and differ by country, so check the service available in your region for current access.
Spoiler: who killed Sazz?
Season 4 finale spoiler: The killer is Marshall Pope, whose real identity is Rex Bailey. TheWrap’s interview with Jane Lynch identifies the killer. The reveal resolves the Sazz murder, tying the season’s central case back to the question of who was actually being targeted.
