The controversy centers on One-Punch Man Season 3, episode 9, and the version of Child Emperor’s fight with Phoenix Man that the anime adapted. A report carried by Gotonews and attributed to Polygon says the episode follows an earlier version of the manga fight rather than a later redrawn version. The dispute is about the story and character material that choice includes or leaves out—not a new verdict on the season’s animation.
What is the controversy about?
The episode’s adaptation choice has divided readers who favor different versions of the Child Emperor–Phoenix Man fight. According to the Gotonews report attributing the story to Polygon, the anime uses the earlier online version. A later redrawn version adds Saitama and further story and character beats. The report describes contrasting fan reactions, but provides no poll or figures showing how widely either view is held.
The sources available do not explain why the production selected the earlier version. The episode choice should therefore be treated as a reported adaptation decision, not as an officially explained creative rationale.
How do the two versions differ?
| Comparison | Earlier version, as described in the report | Later redrawn version, as described in the report |
|---|---|---|
| Story material | Centers on Child Emperor’s fight with Phoenix Man. | Adds Saitama and additional Phoenix Man/Zombieman story and character beats. |
| Character focus | Gives Child Emperor a sustained confrontation and a victory framed around his own efforts. | Broadens the scene beyond Child Emperor, bringing in additional characters and developments. |
| Pacing and spectacle | Some readers prefer its extended focus on the fight. | Some readers prefer the expanded material and its connections to later story developments. |
These are reported points of comparison, not objective ratings. For readers who value Child Emperor standing on his own, the earlier version can feel more focused. Readers who prefer the redrawn version may find its added interactions and continuity more satisfying. A hybrid version has also been suggested by fans, according to the report, but it is not the version the episode is said to have adapted.

What else did the report say the episode omitted?
The same report points to the Millennium Emperor Nova sequence. It says the manga shows the Moon and a crater associated with Saitama, while the anime leaves out that image. The report interprets the image as a tease of the later “God” storyline; that is the report’s reading of the scene, not an official explanation from the anime’s production team.
How does this differ from the season’s animation criticism?
Season 3 has also faced criticism of its animation, but that is a separate debate from the episode 9 adaptation choice. GamesRadar quoted animator Vincent Chansard saying, “Sometimes, it’s not about the animation studio; sometimes it’s about the production committee that is on top of everything.” His comment concerns broader animation backlash; it does not explain why episode 9 used one manga version rather than another.

GamesRadar also reported that director Shinpei Nagai asked for his role to be kept quiet because he was relatively unknown and thought disclosure might give a bad impression. The outlet reproduced his statement: “Since I’m relatively unknown and don’t have standout achievements as an animator, I thought it might give a bad impression, so I asked to keep it under wraps.” That reported comment is production context, not an explanation of the Phoenix Man adaptation choice.

VIZ’s October 7, 2025 announcement said the original manga had more than 35 million copies in circulation. That is a dated franchise-wide figure, not a measure of Season 3 viewership or opinion about episode 9.
