Spoiler warning: This explanation covers the Wano arc and the reveal associated with manga Chapter 1044. Luffy’s fruit is known publicly as the Gomu Gomu no Mi, but its concealed identity is the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, a Mythical Zoan. The awakened form connected to it is Gear 5.
What is Luffy’s Devil Fruit really called?
The familiar name, Gomu Gomu no Mi, is not the fruit’s full identity. The official ONE PIECE.com description of a Gear 5 Luffy figure identifies it as the Hito Hito no Mi, Mythical Zoan, Model: Nika and connects its awakening to Gear 5 (official Gear 5 figure description).
So the two names are not competing fan theories or separate fruits: Gomu Gomu no Mi is the name Luffy and others have known, while Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika is the concealed identity revealed later in the story.
What kind of fruit is it, and what does Nika mean here?
The official description classifies the fruit as a Mythical Zoan. It associates the awakened Gear 5 form with the imagery of Nika, described as a warrior of liberation and Sun God Nika. That supports saying Gear 5 recalls or evokes Nika; it does not, by itself, establish a separate claim that Luffy is literally Nika.

How does Gear 5 fit the reveal?
Gear 5 is Luffy’s awakened form, linked by the official description to the fruit’s Nika identity. The reveal therefore changes how the reader understands the name and classification of the power Luffy has used—not the basic fact that the story had long identified his fruit as the Gomu Gomu no Mi.
The precise mechanics, dialogue, and full account of how the identity was concealed belong to the manga’s Chapter 1044. VIZ’s official page confirms the chapter listing, but its available listing does not provide the complete chapter text. For panel-level detail or exact quotations, consult the licensed chapter itself (VIZ Chapter 1044 listing).
