There is no official all-member ranking of the Straw Hat Pirates, and “best” is not the same as “strongest.” This list ranks the ten members named on Shueisha’s official One Piece roster by a blend of narrative impact, contribution to the crew, character development, and reader appeal. It is an editorial judgment, not a canonical order or a combat tier list.
How this ranking works
The order considers what each pirate brings to the crew as well as how compellingly the character shapes the story. Fighting ability is only one part of that picture: the crew’s work also depends on navigation, medicine, cooking, archaeology, shipbuilding, music, and marksmanship. Official role and ability summaries below are drawn from Bandai Namco’s February 10, 2023 crew profiles. Those profiles describe characters; they do not rank their strength.
The scope is the ten members on Shueisha’s roster: Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Chopper, Robin, Franky, Brook, and Jinbe. The ranking is about their overall value and appeal as characters, not bounty totals, popularity-vote results, or a claim that one is objectively superior.
The Straw Hats, ranked
1. Monkey D. Luffy
Luffy ranks first because his ambition and choices give the series its central drive. As captain, he draws the crew together and turns its members’ individual journeys into a shared adventure. His elastic powers are part of his combat identity, but his defining contribution is the way his commitment to freedom and loyalty repeatedly propels the story forward.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Nami
Nami’s navigation is indispensable: the crew needs someone able to read weather and guide its course. Her value is not limited to that practical expertise. Her resourcefulness and emotional growth make her one of the strongest balances to Luffy’s impulsiveness, and her decisions often matter as much as a fighter’s victory.
3. Roronoa Zoro
Zoro is one of the crew’s major combatants and a specialist in the three-sword style, according to Bandai Namco’s profile. His fierce discipline and unwavering loyalty give him weight beyond battles. He ranks just below Nami because this is a whole-character list: combat strength matters, but so does the breadth of a member’s contribution to the crew and story.
Rank #2

4. Sanji
Sanji’s combination of cooking and kick-based martial arts makes him valuable in the kitchen and in a fight. The contrast between those roles helps define him: care for the crew is expressed through both feeding them and protecting them. His personal development and dramatic presence make him one of the crew’s most rounded characters.
5. Nico Robin
Robin’s archaeology gives the crew a distinct connection to the world’s buried history, while her ability to make body parts bloom gives her a versatile role in action. Her reserved manner and gradual trust in the crew provide a particularly affecting character arc. She ranks in the upper half because her knowledge and perspective deepen the story in ways few others can.

6. Usopp
Usopp is the crew’s sharpshooter, skilled with a slingshot. His fear and self-doubt make his courage feel earned rather than automatic: he is often most compelling when he acts despite being frightened. His ingenuity and humor also give the crew a different kind of usefulness from its more straightforward fighters.
7. Jinbe
Jinbe belongs on the list because Shueisha includes him among the ten Straw Hats. His placement here reflects the limits of this ranking’s chosen evidence: the cited Bandai Namco profile feature describes nine members but does not include him. Rather than assign him detailed abilities or a combat position without a supporting character source, this list keeps his entry brief and ranks him by the confirmed scope of the roster.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
8. Tony Tony Chopper
Chopper is the crew’s doctor and a reindeer-human hybrid. That medical role is a core contribution, not a secondary convenience: the crew’s ability to keep going depends on care as much as on victories. His earnestness and desire to help give him a strong emotional presence, though his story impact is less central to this ranking than that of the members above him.
9. Franky
Franky is the shipwright, a cyborg, and the person whose expertise supports the crew’s vessel and its continued travels. His combination of mechanical know-how and flamboyant personality makes him distinctive. He ranks lower here because his most essential contribution is specialized, rather than because that work is unimportant.

10. Brook
Brook is the crew’s musician and a swordsman. Music gives the Straw Hats a role and a source of companionship beyond navigation, medicine, or fighting, while his swordsmanship adds another dimension to his place in the crew. He rounds out this subjective list; tenth does not mean dispensable, since every member brings something no other Straw Hat quite replaces.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why this is not a strength ranking
A combat-only order would need a different standard: comparable feats, versatility, and reliability from the same point in the story. The sources cited here do not establish a current Straw Hat combat tier list, and a game-publisher profile is not a substitute for one. Similarly, bounty figures or popularity results would measure different things and cannot, by themselves, decide who is the “best” character.
Where to read the original story
Shueisha identifies One Piece as Eiichiro Oda’s manga and records its serialization beginning in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 34 of 1997. Its official series page lists collected volumes, including volumes 115 and 116. For readers who want to revisit how the crew’s roles and relationships develop, the original manga is the most direct place to follow them.
