Luffy founded the crew, Zoro was the first official recruit, and Jinbe is the tenth current member. The recruitment stories are not always straightforward: Nami’s membership is finalized after Arlong Park, Robin’s place is confirmed at Enies Lobby, and Jinbe joins formally before he can travel continuously with the crew.
There are currently 10 active Straw Hat Pirates: Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Nami, Usopp, Sanji, Tony Tony Chopper, Nico Robin, Franky, Brook, and Jinbe. Together, their listed bounties total 8,816,001,000 berries. Their jobs range from captain and navigator to doctor, archaeologist, shipwright, musician, and helmsman.
This guide follows the crew’s recruitment order and explains the important qualifications behind each joining story. Some members traveled with Luffy before formally accepting a place in the crew; others temporarily left and later returned. Nefertari Vivi is treated separately because she is an honorary companion, not one of the 10 current Straw Hats.

Monkey D. Luffy: founder and captain
Luffy is not a recruit in the usual sense: he is the founder of the Straw Hat Pirates. After leaving Fuchsia Village, he begins his voyage with the ambition of becoming Pirate King and starts assembling a crew in the East Blue. Zoro is his first recruit.
Luffy’s recruitment style is unusually direct. He tends to recognize a person’s ability, character, or dream before that person is ready to accept his invitation. Several of the Straw Hats initially refuse him, cooperate with him only temporarily, or have obligations that must be resolved before they can leave. In practice, Luffy often treats someone as a friend and crewmate before the person formally agrees to the role.
1. Roronoa Zoro: the first official recruit
Luffy meets Zoro in Shells Town, where the swordsman has been imprisoned at a Marine base. Zoro was punished after protecting a child from Helmeppo, the corrupt son of Marine Captain Morgan. Even while facing execution, Zoro refuses to abandon his principles.
Luffy hears about Zoro’s skill and conviction and decides that he wants him on the crew. After helping free him and defeating Morgan, Luffy invites Zoro to join. Zoro accepts, continuing his pursuit of becoming the world’s greatest swordsman while becoming Luffy’s first official crewmate and principal combat partner.

That description reflects his seniority, authority, and position beside the captain, but it should not be presented as a formally announced crew title unless it is clearly labeled as an interpretation.
2. Nami: the navigator whose membership is finalized at Arlong Park
Nami first appears as a pirate-specializing thief. She initially refuses Luffy’s invitation, although she temporarily works alongside Luffy, Zoro, and Usopp while pursuing her own plan. Her apparent independence hides the fact that she is being forced to serve Arlong.
Arlong killed Nami’s adoptive mother, Bellemere, and then exploited Nami’s talent for cartography. Nami agreed to work for him in the hope that she could eventually buy the freedom of Cocoyasi Village. This is why her early cooperation with the Straw Hats is complicated: she is not yet free to choose a new crew.
After Luffy and the others defeat Arlong and destroy Arlong Park, Nami is released from Arlong’s control. That victory is the decisive point at which her relationship with the Straw Hats becomes genuine membership. In other words, Nami travels with them before her membership is emotionally and narratively finalized, but Arlong Park is the clearest joining point.
3. Usopp: the sniper from Syrup Village
Usopp is introduced in Syrup Village as a notorious liar and the leader of the Usopp Pirates. His stories sound ridiculous, but they conceal a desire to become a genuinely brave warrior of the sea.
The Straw Hats become involved after learning that Kaya’s butler, Kuro, is secretly the pirate Captain Kuro. Kuro plans to murder Kaya and take her fortune. Luffy’s crew and Usopp work together to stop the plot, and Kaya rewards them with the Going Merry.

Usopp leaves Syrup Village with Luffy and becomes the crew’s sniper. His recruitment is also the first time the Straw Hats receive the ship that carries them through much of their early journey.
Did Usopp ever leave the Straw Hats?
Yes, temporarily. Usopp leaves after the dispute over the badly damaged Going Merry and after losing a duel with Luffy. The separation is serious, but it is not a permanent expulsion from the story or the roster. At Enies Lobby, Usopp returns in disguise, apologizes, and asks to be accepted again. He remains one of the 10 current Straw Hats.

4. Sanji: the Baratie cook
Luffy meets Sanji at the Baratie, where Sanji works as a sous-chef under Zeff. Luffy immediately wants him on the crew because the Straw Hats need a cook and because Sanji’s skill is exceptional. Sanji refuses at first: he feels bound to the restaurant and to the man who saved his life.
When Don Krieg attacks the Baratie, Sanji sees Luffy’s fearlessness firsthand. Zeff and the other cooks then encourage him to pursue the dream he has carried since childhood: finding the All Blue, the legendary sea said to contain fish from every ocean.
Sanji’s recruitment is therefore more than a simple consequence of Luffy defeating Don Krieg. Sanji must resolve his debt to Zeff and his loyalty to the Baratie before he can leave. Once he does, he joins Luffy as the crew’s cook.
Did Sanji leave the crew?
Sanji temporarily leaves during the Whole Cake Island storyline because of pressure from his family and Big Mom’s organization. Like Usopp’s departure, this does not remove him from the current Straw Hat roster. Sanji ultimately returns to the crew.
Readers who want the earliest recruitment arcs in print can look for One Piece Box Set 1: East Blue and Baroque Works, which covers the manga material containing the original East Blue recruitment stories and the early Grand Line journey. Availability and price vary by retailer.
5. Tony Tony Chopper: the doctor of Drum Island
Chopper is a blue-nosed reindeer who ate the Human-Human Fruit. Because he looks and behaves differently from ordinary reindeer and humans, he is treated as a monster for much of his early life.
Dr. Hiriluk gives Chopper acceptance, a name, and the inspiration to become a doctor. After Hiriluk’s death, Dr. Kureha continues his medical education. When Luffy and the crew encounter Chopper in the Drum Kingdom, they accept him despite his fear of humans.
Luffy invites Chopper to travel with the Straw Hats. Chopper leaves because he wants to become a stronger doctor and carry forward Hiriluk’s dream of helping others. He becomes the ship’s doctor and continues pursuing the goal of becoming a physician capable of curing any disease—a “万能薬,” or all-purpose remedy.
6. Nico Robin: from Baroque Works agent to archaeologist
Robin’s path into the crew is among the most complicated. She is first introduced as Miss All Sunday, a senior agent of Baroque Works and an ally of Crocodile. After Crocodile’s defeat, Robin asks Luffy to let her sail with the Straw Hats. Luffy accepts, even though the others are understandably suspicious of her past.

Robin’s membership is ultimately confirmed not by a single casual invitation, but by the crew’s decision to rescue her at Enies Lobby. The World Government wants her because she can read the ancient script and investigate the world’s hidden history. Robin deliberately allows CP9 to take her because she believes surrendering herself is the only way to protect the Straw Hats.
The Straw Hats reject that sacrifice. They declare war on the World Government and fight to bring Robin home. From the tower at Enies Lobby, Robin finally says that she wants to live. That declaration is the emotional confirmation of her place in the crew, after which she returns as its archaeologist.
7. Franky: the shipwright who built the Thousand Sunny
Franky is first encountered in Water Seven as the leader of the Franky Family and an opponent of the Straw Hats. His history is closely connected to shipbuilding, the legendary shipwright Tom, the sea train, and the blueprints for the ancient weapon Pluton.

After the conflict, the Going Merry reaches the end of its service. Franky then builds the Thousand Sunny, the crew’s next major ship.
Luffy asks Franky to join, but Franky initially refuses because he believes he must remain in Water Seven. Iceburg and the Franky Family persuade him that he can honor his responsibilities while also pursuing his own future. Franky eventually joins as the Straw Hats’ shipwright and sails aboard the ship he built.
8. Brook: the musician from Thriller Bark
The Straw Hats meet Brook aboard a ghost ship near Thriller Bark. He is a resurrected skeleton whose Devil Fruit power brought him back to life after the death of his original body.
Brook previously sailed with the Rumbar Pirates and made a promise to reunite with Laboon. Luffy immediately invites him to join because he has always wanted a musician on the crew. Brook accepts, but he cannot leave Thriller Bark until his stolen shadow is recovered from Gecko Moria’s forces.

After the Straw Hats defeat Moria, Brook learns that Laboon is still waiting for the Rumbar Pirates. He then sets out with Luffy as the crew’s musician, carrying both his promise to Laboon and the memory of his former crew.
9. Jinbe: the helmsman and tenth current Straw Hat
Jinbe’s connection with Luffy begins long before his formal recruitment. He is a former Warlord of the Sea and former captain of the Sun Pirates, and he becomes a major ally during the Impel Down and Marineford-related events.
At Fish-Man Island, Jinbe helps defend the island and gives Luffy a blood transfusion despite the social prohibition against human–fish-man transfusions. His actions reinforce the bond between them and the broader theme of overcoming prejudice between humans and fish-men.

After the Fish-Man Island conflict, Jinbe decides that helping Luffy advance can also contribute to the freedom of fish-men. He must first resolve his obligations to the Sun Pirates and Big Mom’s organization. He returns the sake cup connected with his former allegiance and declares his intention to join the Straw Hats.

- Nami: She cooperates with Luffy’s group before she is truly free from Arlong. Her post-Arlong decision is the meaningful confirmation of her membership.
- Usopp: He temporarily leaves after the Going Merry dispute, then returns after apologizing and asking to be accepted again.
- Sanji: He temporarily leaves during the Whole Cake Island storyline but ultimately returns.
- Robin: She joins after Crocodile’s defeat, but Enies Lobby is where the crew publicly and emotionally confirms that she belongs with them.
- Jinbe: He accepts Luffy’s invitation before he can travel continuously with the crew. His formal arrival comes later, in Wano.
Is Vivi a Straw Hat Pirate?
Nefertari Vivi is the most important borderline case. She travels with the Straw Hats through the journey to Alabasta and remains one of their closest friends. However, she chooses to stay in Alabasta as its princess after the war rather than continue sailing with the crew.
When Vivi asks the Straw Hats to consider her a companion again if they meet in the future, the crew answers by raising their left arms and showing the matching mark. The scene establishes a profound bond, but not a new active pirate. Vivi is best described as a former traveling companion or honorary Straw Hat, not an eleventh member of the current roster.
Are the Going Merry and Thousand Sunny crew members?
No. The Going Merry and Thousand Sunny are ships, not human members of the crew. Even so, they are central to the Straw Hats’ identity. The Going Merry carries the crew through its formative adventures and receives an emotionally significant farewell when it can no longer sail. Franky then builds the Thousand Sunny, which becomes the crew’s main ship.

For fans who want a physical reminder of that part of the story, LEGO The Going Merry Pirate Ship 75639 is a buildable display model based on the ship. It is a merchandise recommendation rather than a substitute for the story’s original farewell, and availability can vary.
Collecting the Straw Hat crew
The crew’s distinct jobs and silhouettes also make them natural subjects for character collecting. Licensed One Piece Straw Hat figures, including Bandai’s Anime Heroes line, are available as individual character figures. A character-specific purchase makes more sense than treating the crew as interchangeable: collectors can choose Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Franky, or another member according to the role or story arc that matters most to them.
The One Piece Card Game’s Straw Hat Crew Starter Deck ST-01 is another physical product built around the crew, but it is aimed at players rather than readers looking specifically for recruitment stories. For that reason, the manga box set and character figures are the more direct companions to this guide.
Final roster
The current active Straw Hat Pirates are:
- Monkey D. Luffy — captain
- Roronoa Zoro — swordsman and combatant
- Nami — navigator
- Usopp — sniper
- Sanji — cook
- Tony Tony Chopper — doctor
- Nico Robin — archaeologist
- Franky — shipwright
- Brook — musician
- Jinbe — helmsman
The most accurate answer to “how many Straw Hat Pirates are there?” is therefore 10 active members, while Vivi belongs in the separate category of treasured former companion or honorary Straw Hat. That count reflects the official roster available at the time of this article and should not be treated as a claim that no future story development can change it.
