In One Piece Volume 95’s SBS, Eiichiro Oda says that real Devil Fruits taste terrible, while SMILEs seem to taste like ordinary fruit. He links that pleasant flavor to the tragedy of Ebisu Town. The same volume separately identifies Sarahebi-sensei’s snake-like neck as the result of a snake SMILE.
Do SMILEs taste better than real Devil Fruits?
Yes, according to Oda’s answer in the Volume 95 SBS: real Devil Fruits taste bad, but SMILEs have the flavor of ordinary fruit. The question refers to people in Okobore Town calling SMILEs delicious apples and asks whether they taste better than genuine Devil Fruits. A Japanese transcription of the SBS records the answer; an English fan-maintained compilation translates it as: “Somehow, SMILEs take on the flavour of normal fruits.” The official One Piece site lists Volume 95, though the precise wording may vary between translations and editions.

How does the flavor connect to Ebisu Town?
Oda connects SMILEs’ ordinary-fruit flavor to the tragedy of Ebisu Town: because they taste like normal fruit, people can eat them without the warning that a uniquely awful taste might provide. The English compilation renders his next thought as: “However, it can also be said that it’s because of this that the tragedy of Ebisu Town could occur.” That is a translated rendering, not a quotation from an identified official English edition. The point is the contrast between an apparently ordinary taste and the consequences associated with the fruit.
What does Volume 95 say about Sarahebi-sensei?
In a separate SBS clarification, Oda says Sarahebi-sensei’s snake-like neck comes from a snake SMILE. This is a specific explanation for her appearance; it does not establish that every SMILE user develops the same kind of animal feature or that all SMILE effects work alike.

How are SMILEs different from ordinary Devil Fruits?
The taste answer is only one narrow point, not a complete account of how the fruits work. The official One Piece overview describes Devil Fruits as granting varied unusual powers and imposing a cost on users. Later SBS material, compiled for Volume 99, calls SMILEs artificial Devil Fruits and says they differ completely from regular Devil Fruits. That later distinction should not be mistaken for the specific explanation Oda gives in Volume 95 about taste.
