Eiichiro Oda says Luffy’s appeal comes from his “child’s heart”: he acts on what he wants, embodying a freedom that adults may feel they lose when they enter society. Oda shared that explanation in a conversation with Iñaki Godoy, the actor who plays Luffy in Netflix’s live-action One Piece.
What makes Luffy special to Eiichiro Oda?
Oda described Luffy as “an ideal child” and connected his appeal to the freedom of doing what he wants. As Oda put it, joining a company and entering society can mean that adults “can’t always do what you want.” Luffy’s childlike heart lets him act without that restraint—a quality Oda believes resonates both with adults already working in society and with children approaching adulthood.
That answer came after Godoy asked how Oda created a character who can seem simple at first yet feel deep and endearing. The exchange was reported by Gizmodo on December 19, 2024.
How Luffy’s freedom shapes the story
Luffy’s lack of restraint is not just a personality trait; it also affects the story’s tone. Oda has said that making someone like Luffy the hero lets him take even very serious situations and “make it fun somehow.” His optimism and directness give the series room to move between danger, comedy and adventure without making those elements feel like separate stories.

Netflix’s official guide to One Piece calls Luffy the story’s “heart and soul.” It also frames the Straw Hats as misfits brought together by dreams and found family. Oda’s explanation of Luffy’s appeal fits within that larger ensemble: his freedom helps set the emotional tone, while the crew’s bonds give the adventure a shared purpose.
What Oda said about Netflix’s live-action adaptation
In the same reported conversation, Oda recalled seeing filming, props, large sets, special effects, wigs, costumes and stunts on the Cape Town set. He said the production team’s dedication touched him. Asked by Godoy whether the acting was good, Oda answered, “It was.”

Netflix identifies Oda as the manga’s creator and illustrator and an executive producer on the live-action series. The adaptation was made in partnership with Shueisha and produced by Tomorrow Studios and Netflix; Godoy plays Luffy. Those credits help explain why the exchange matters: Oda was speaking both as the character’s creator and as a producer who had seen the adaptation’s work firsthand.

Oda also described the next season as requiring “new, surprising elements,” which he said makes it more challenging. The reported discussion links that challenge to adapting the Grand Line, where the series must expand its world while preserving the energy and tone established by Luffy and the Straw Hats. Netflix confirmed the live-action series’ renewal after its first season, but the cited comments do not establish current release timing or streaming availability.
