His final decision, after Might Guy defeats him, makes that tension unmistakable. Kisame remains a dangerous Akatsuki operative to the end—and chooses what his death will protect.
A fearsome Akatsuki operative with a clear role
Kisame enters the story as a formidable enemy, partnered with Itachi as the two begin Akatsuki missions together, according to the official episode listing. That establishes his place in the organization, though it does not by itself establish the emotional depth of his relationship with Itachi.
His identity is also tied to Samehada, the oversized, bandage-wrapped sword. It is a striking visual signature, but not merely a weapon he carries: Kisame uses it to conceal himself. In the official retrospective, Naruto senses a malicious presence inside the Samehada carried by Killer Bee, and the shinobi discover Kisame hiding within it. The sword makes his reveal feel like an extension of the character—his monstrous presence is literally concealed inside the thing most associated with him.
Samehada makes the reveal more than a disguise
Samehada links Kisame’s design to the plot. Its enormous, wrapped form is immediately recognizable, while its role in hiding him turns that signature object into a practical means of infiltration. The official Naruto site also described the weapon as iconic in its coverage of a Kisame figure, highlighting its oversized, bandaged appearance: the figure announcement.

#1 Best Overall
- Naruto Uzumaki, as seen in "NARUTO: Shippuden," rejoins S.H.Figuarts with all new joint technology
- [Set Contents] Main Body, Three left and four right optional hands, Four optional expressions, Kunai, "Rasengan" effect, Crossed arm parts
- Stands approximately 5.5" tall
- The product box will have a Bandai Namco warning label, which is proof that you are purchasing an officially licensed product
That combination helps explain why Kisame is memorable without relying on a ranking or power score. His silhouette, weapon, and tactics reinforce one another: he looks like a threat, carries a weapon that marks him as himself, and uses that weapon to remain unseen.
Might Guy defeats him, but Kisame controls his last choice
After Naruto’s group discovers him, Kisame tries to escape and is confronted by Might Guy and the other shinobi. Guy defeats him with Hirudora. The official retrospective then describes Kisame as recognizing that death is inevitable and summoning sharks to kill and eat him before the enemy can obtain information about his comrades and their plans.

“Knowing that his death is inevitable, Kisame summons sharks which he then sets on himself, choosing to be eaten alive rather than give the enemy information about his comrades and their plans.”
This is the turning point in how the story frames him. Kisame does not win the fight, and he does not escape capture by outmaneuvering Guy. Instead, faced with defeat, he chooses what his enemies will learn. The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE anniversary retrospective calls his death a sacrifice befitting a shinobi and says he lives his final moments with pride.

Loyalty complicates Kisame without absolving him
Kisame’s final act makes his allegiance legible: he is willing to die rather than betray his comrades or expose Akatsuki’s plans. That loyalty gives the character a dimension beyond his reputation as a brutal opponent. It does not make him innocent, undo the harm he caused, or turn his methods into something admirable. The tension is precisely that the same person can be a lethal enemy and a disciplined protector of his own side.
His death also gives him agency at the moment when he has lost control of the battle. The choice is grim, and the story does not need to present it as morally pure for it to matter. Kisame decides what his life and death will mean within the shinobi world: his enemies may defeat him, but they will not use him to reach his comrades.

Why Kisame remains compelling
- His reputation and loyalty coexist. The story makes him threatening without reducing him to a faceless weapon of Akatsuki.
- Samehada serves character and plot. It defines his appearance and enables the concealment that drives his reveal.
- His defeat leads to a decisive choice. Guy wins the encounter, but Kisame determines that his comrades’ information will remain protected.
That is a stronger basis for calling Kisame one of Naruto’s most compelling villains than any invented ranking: his final act changes how the reader understands his allegiance, without asking the reader to forget what he has done.
