One Direction formed on 23 July 2010, when five solo contestants on the UK’s The X Factor were put together as a group. They released five studio albums from 2011 to 2015; Zayn Malik left in March 2015, and the band’s activity paused after the final album. The timeline below follows those turning points and later context, including Liam Payne’s death in 2024.
When did One Direction form?
One Direction was assembled during the seventh season of the UK edition of The X Factor. Sony Music Japan gives the formation date as 23 July 2010. Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Liam Payne had auditioned separately before being brought together as a group. They went on to finish third in the competition, according to the Associated Press.

How did the five-album run unfold?
One Direction’s official catalog lists five studio albums released in consecutive years. The first four were made with the original five members; Made in the A.M. was the only studio album released after Malik’s departure.

The UK chart milestones and US album record describe different measures. The Official Charts Company lists four UK Number 1 singles and four UK Number 1 albums for the group. Sony Music UK reported in its 2020 anniversary retrospective that One Direction became the first band in US Billboard 200 history whose first four albums all debuted at Number 1.

When did Zayn leave One Direction?
The Official Charts Company and Sony Music Japan date Malik’s departure to March 2015. The group continued as a four-piece and released Made in the A.M. that November. It was their fifth studio album and their first without Malik.
When did One Direction go on hiatus?
There is no single date used consistently across the cited accounts. Sony Music Japan says the group’s activity paused at the end of 2015, while the Official Charts Company describes an indefinite hiatus. The Associated Press has referred to the band as having disbanded in 2016. These descriptions point to the same period of inactivity, but they should not be collapsed into a more exact date than the sources establish.

What happened after the hiatus?
The tenth anniversary
On 23 July 2020, Sony Music UK marked ten years since One Direction formed with an anniversary site built around the band’s five album eras and an archive of videos and performances. In that retrospective, the label reported more than 200 million records sold worldwide, more than 21 billion streams across platforms and nearly 200 awards, including seven BRIT Awards. Those are figures reported by Sony Music UK in 2020, not a current independently audited total.
Liam Payne’s death
Liam Payne died in October 2024 at age 31. The Associated Press reported that he died after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. His death came years after One Direction’s activity had paused and is important later context in accounts of the group’s history.
