It is a 2024 limited series built from annual snapshots: it returns to the same date, 15 July, in successive years to follow Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew from their graduation night in 1988. The frustration many viewers describe comes from the romance itself, which keeps missing its moment for years at a time, and from a tragic turn that the series takes from David Nicholls’s 2009 novel.
What the series actually does
Netflix presents the show as a decades-spanning love story based on the worldwide bestseller by David Nicholls. Its viewing page lists it as a limited series and tags it with “Bittersweet,” “Enduring Love,” and “Based on a Book.” Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall star as Emma and Dexter.
Netflix Tudum’s explainer says the two reunite on the same day every year. That describes a structure of periodic jumps, which is what the series uses. It does not describe supernatural or science-fiction travel, and nothing in the official material suggests the characters move through time themselves. The “time-travel” wording in headlines is best read as shorthand for a story that spans decades.
How the 15 July structure unfolds
Each episode anchors on the same calendar date, which lets the audience measure change in two people across a single year at a time. TIME’s account of the series gives the broad outline of the timeline:

| Stage | What the series shows | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Emma and Dexter meet on graduation night, 15 July 1988 | Netflix |
| Early episodes | Successive 15 July dates through 1999 (TIME reports these are covered in the first twelve episodes) | TIME, 2024 |

The format is the main reason the story feels different from a conventional romance. A year can pass between scenes, so a rift, a reconciliation, or a career change arrives without the usual build-up. Viewers who want continuity from one episode to the next will notice the gaps most.
Why the romance is frustrating
The delays are structural. Emma and Dexter are repeatedly close without being together, and the annual format makes each near-miss feel like a missed chance. TV Guide frames this as deliberate: viewers want the pair to get together, and the intervening episodes either feel lackluster or deepen investment depending on how the viewer reads them. The frustration is therefore an audience response to pacing, not an objective flaw.

Whether the frustration is fair depends on what you came for. It tends to be strongest among viewers who expected a conventional romance with steady momentum.
- Likely to be frustrated: viewers who want the couple together early and expect regular on-screen contact between the leads.
- Likely to be engaged: viewers who enjoy watching slow change across decades and accept that the delay is the point.
- Mixed: viewers who like the premise but find the years between snapshots hard to invest in.

TIME reports that the series largely follows the novel’s final tragedy. Emma and Dexter eventually marry, Emma dies in a cycling collision, and the later episodes follow Dexter through his grief. TIME also reports that the 2011 film adaptation came before the Netflix series.
The ending is contested, and both sides have attributed explanations. Director Lone Scherfig defended the unexpected direction. David Nicholls argued that the tragedy stops the story from being only a “will they or won’t they” romance. TIME, while praising much of what precedes the ending, records criticism that the ending is abrupt. Whether it feels earned is a judgment viewers reach for themselves.

In TIME’s reporting, Nicholls described the novel’s premise this way: “The premise of the novel was it should be like looking through a photograph album.” That image fits the format well: the series asks you to look at moments rather than watch a continuous story.

What is and is not established
- Established by Netflix and its Tudum explainer: the premise, the annual 15 July structure, the lead cast, and the basis in Nicholls’s novel.
- Established by TIME (2024): the timeline through 1999 in the early episodes, the 2011 film, the ending’s broad outline, and the sales and translation figures for the novel.
- Established by TV Guide’s review: the reading of the delayed romance as a source of audience tension.
- Not established in these sources: streaming availability by country, current print or digital editions of the novel, and any viewership figures for the series. Check Netflix in your region before watching, since availability varies by territory.
If you go in expecting a time-travel mechanism, you will be looking for the wrong thing. If you go in expecting a long, uneven romance told in annual snapshots, the frustration is part of what the show is built to produce.
