The first reviews of Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another are strongly positive, with critics praising its ambition, darkly comic energy and unusual command of action and suspense. But “another masterpiece” is a critical judgment, not a settled fact: the praise is not unanimous, and reviewers differ on what kind of film Anderson has made.
Does One Battle After Another live up to expectations?
The early critical response makes a strong case for seeing it as one of Anderson’s major films, while leaving room for viewers to disagree. Rotten Tomatoes’ December 15, 2025 review roundup collected enthusiastic descriptions of the film’s scale, action direction and comic energy. Amy Nicholson of the Los Angeles Times, reviewing it on September 24, 2025, called it an “invigorating political thriller” and observed that its title could also suit the history of humankind.
The praise has limits. Nick Howells of the London Evening Standard cautioned that claims it was one of the best films of the 21st century were “ever so slightly exaggerated.” Keith Uhlich’s Slant Magazine review, listed by Metacritic, likewise argued that the film’s ambition overreaches. The fairest answer is that critics largely admired the movie’s reach and craft, but not every reviewer thought its ambition fully worked.
Rotten Tomatoes’ listing showed a 94% Tomatometer from 447 reviews and an 85% Popcornmeter from more than 5,000 verified ratings when retrieved October 4, 2026. These are changeable listing snapshots, not permanent scores or proof of a unanimous response. The Associated Press reported that the film received a CinemaScore after its opening weekend; that audience grade is a separate measure from critics’ reviews.

What kind of film is it?
It is best described as a politically charged action thriller with dark comedy and family drama. The balance shifts over the course of the film, which helps explain why critics reach for different genre labels. Richard Lawson of The Hollywood Reporter calls it essentially a thriller, “albeit one teeming with enormous ideas about the collapse and possible rescue of the country.” Liz Shannon Miller of Consequence emphasizes its epic-scale action-comedy elements, while Matt Singer of ScreenCrush sees a character-driven thriller built around a father and daughter.
That mix is central to the film’s identity: political ideas and high-stakes action share space with a personal story, rather than one element neatly defining the whole. It is not simply a conventional political action movie, nor a family drama with action added as decoration; Anderson’s idiosyncratic tone keeps the genres in conversation.

How does it compare with Anderson’s other films?
Several critics describe One Battle After Another as more accessible and crowd-pleasing than some of Anderson’s previous work. Matt Neglia of Next Best Picture places it among Anderson’s more accessible films, while Lawson points to its aptitude for action and suspense. These are reviewers’ characterizations, not objective rankings of his filmography.
Its action-forward approach and comic energy give it a different balance from a film chiefly organized around quieter character observation. At the same time, the father-daughter relationship keeps the political and action elements anchored in a personal stake. For viewers familiar with Anderson’s work, the useful expectation is not a departure from his distinctive authorship but a conspicuously suspenseful, action-driven expression of it.

Warner Bros.’ official movie site lists a nationwide U.S. theatrical opening of September 26, 2025, and international openings beginning September 24, 2025. It identifies VistaVision, 70mm film and IMAX as presentation formats. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film as rated R, with a runtime of 2 hours 41 minutes; the Associated Press rounded the running time to 170 minutes in its coverage.
Rotten Tomatoes’ retrieved listing showed subscription options including Prime Video and HBO Max, along with rental or purchase through Fandango. That is a third-party availability snapshot, and streaming catalogs vary by territory and date. Check current local listings before choosing a service.
Is Vineland worth reading alongside the film?
Readers curious about the film’s literary connection can try Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland. The connection is described as loose inspiration, rather than a direct screen adaptation, so the novel is best approached as a related point of reference rather than a plot guide.
