He praises the film’s momentum, large-scale action, ensemble, comedy, and contemporary relevance, while flagging murky developments, meandering stretches, and provocative satire that may not land as intended. The Oscar race mentioned in that review is now settled: the film won six awards at the 98th Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Hughes’s verdict: ambitious, uneven, and ultimately effective
In his September 27, 2025 review for Forbes, Mark Hughes describes Paul Thomas Anderson’s film as one of the director’s more mainstream projects: a political action-driven character comedy built on a larger scale than his work is often associated with. For Hughes, that shift mostly works. The film’s propulsion, performances, comic timing, and topical force carry it through stretches that are less clear or compelling.
That is a favorable judgment, but not an unqualified endorsement. Hughes’s “mixed bag” framing matters: he sees real weaknesses in the storytelling and in the risks taken by the satire, rather than treating the film’s ambition as proof that every choice succeeds.
What works: action, ensemble, comedy, and urgency
Action with momentum
Hughes singles out the film’s large-scale action filmmaking and forward drive. An extended raid on an immigrant community stands out in his account as a major sequence, combining the film’s physical scale with its political subject matter. The action is not merely a change of pace from Anderson’s earlier work; it is part of what makes the film feel unusually accessible and propulsive within his filmography.

An ensemble that gives the film its force
The review identifies Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn, Chase Infiniti, Benicio del Toro, and Regina Hall as central to the film’s appeal. Hughes treats the ensemble as a major asset, helping sustain a story that moves among action, comedy, and political material.
Comedy and contemporary relevance
Hughes also praises the comedic timing and the film’s relevance to contemporary concerns. Its tonal mix is part of its appeal: moments of absurdity and humor coexist with politically charged action and character drama. The film’s ambition is to make those elements work together rather than choose between entertainment and topical commentary.

Where the film falters
Clarity and plausibility
Hughes finds some developments confusing or implausible, with the significance of certain events left murky. That lack of clarity can blunt the impact of scenes that seem designed to carry substantial narrative or thematic weight.
Meandering and weakened reveals
He also argues that parts of the story meander. In his view, the chronological structure weakens some reveals and subplots rather than sharpening them. The result is an uneven sense of narrative momentum: the action may be forceful, but not every stretch of the larger story feels equally focused.

Satire with a risk of misreading
Hughes raises a more serious concern about the film’s use of sexualized racist stereotypes. Satire may intend to expose or condemn an image, but intention does not control how every viewer interprets or enjoys it. His criticism is not that the film lacks a satirical purpose; it is that the imagery carries a risk of being received in ways that work against that purpose.
How the film relates to Thomas Pynchon
Hughes describes One Battle After Another as loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s novel Vineland, not as a direct adaptation. Anderson previously adapted Pynchon’s Inherent Vice. The distinction matters: the connection offers a literary point of reference, but the review does not present the film as a faithful retelling of Vineland.

The Oscar-race framing, updated
Hughes’s September 2025 review appeared while the film was entering the awards conversation. Its contemporary indicators should be read as dated snapshots, not current figures: Hughes reported an A-grade CinemaScore and 96% “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes at publication. He also wrote that the opening weekend was “on track for north of $20 million”; that was an expectation at the time, not the film’s final box-office gross.
The awards outcome arrived later. The Academy’s official 98th Academy Awards results record six wins for One Battle After Another: Best Picture, directing for Paul Thomas Anderson, adapted screenplay for Anderson, film editing for Andy Jurgensen, casting for Cassandra Kulukundis, and supporting actor for Sean Penn. Leonardo DiCaprio and Teyana Taylor were also among the film’s nominees. The film’s eventual Best Picture win changes the status of the Oscar-race headline, but it does not erase the mixed critical assessment Hughes made before the ceremony.

What to take from the review
Hughes’s central case is that One Battle After Another succeeds more often than it stumbles. Its action scale, ensemble, comic timing, and engagement with current issues make it a notable change of register for Anderson; its narrative detours, unclear developments, and potentially counterproductive satirical imagery keep that success from being seamless. As Hughes puts it, the film is “a statement about redemption and condemnation, and how those things can and do still exist within complicated and contradictory situations.”
